Key points for the assay:
Overcoming adversity: I endured a High School football injury in first day of contact practice during my sophomore season; minor crack on scapular.

Injury occurred sophomore year; the year I was being identified as the starting running back. Everything was looking bright; only freshman selected to varsity team with significant playing time. This injury was not expected and something I wasnt ready for.

Injury resulted in missing all but the last two games of my sophomore season. I tried to come back too early and injured it again. I was impatient.

My adversity to overcome was being on the sideline and the feeling of being unable to help the team on the field. This presented both physical and mental challenges.

I had to redirect my efforts and work physically to become stronger; prepare mentally that this was a situation was situation I could not cannot change. I had to prepare myself mentally to accept this and to make sure I was ready when my body is ready. I also had to figure out my new role on the team and how I could best support the team in whatever manner was possible. This included supporting the team during practice and drills, being a coach and cheerleader on the sideline, and remaining connected with the program. The experience prepared me to control the things I could and accept what I could not control, but always looking for alternative ways to contribute.

My physical and mental preparation and work to recover from the injury earned me a starting position the following year resulting in all-conference awards as a receiver. This experience also developed me as a leader on the team and how to deal with adversity and work through difficult situations out of my control. I kept the team positive during tough times contributing to the team making it into the playoffs.

This experience also helped me as a leader on the lacrosse team in the spring of my sophomore year. The team went from a good but undisciplined team during my freshman year to earning the Virginia State title my sophomore year. This was the first title in the schools 60 year history.

The experience of dealing with adversity and situations out of my control allowed me to help keep the team together and motivated during the ongoing pandemic. This included keeping ourselves ready both physically and mentally; keeping the team together in alternative football programs team events while the State has delayed football until the spring. It also included helping the team deal with the unique situation and requirements during the pandemic – keeping social distance but remaining connected.

This injury was a life changing experience that will provide me a roadmap for dealing with adversities in all different situations – academic, professional/work, family, relationships, etc.
