You’ve learned from our course material that sociology uses three very broad perspectives to approach social issues, changes, and institutions across society. The three perspectives (Functionalism, Conflict, and Symbolic Interaction) are not theories that can be proven/disproven, but broad perspectives to approach societal issues. We have also explored disparate yet interrelated social issues such as substance use and risk-taking during college, a period of the life-course known as emerging adulthood, barriers in academic achievement, and inequalities in education.
Please respond to the following prompt:
Describe a social issue of your choice and analyze it using the three perspectives of sociology (functionalism, conflict, and symbolic interactionism). You can choose a topic related to our course material (e.g., emerging adulthood, substance use/risk-taking among college students, inequalities in education) or choose another topic you want to analyze. However, your issue/topic must be one of sociological concern, meaning, it impacts large numbers of people in our society (think sociological imagination). Describe and introduce your social issue/topic (this might be a good place to use an outside credible/academic source). Why did you choose it? Why is it important? Then, analyze your issue from the functionalist perspective, conflict perspective, and symbolic interactionist perspective.
1) Break your Long Discussion Post into logical, flowing sections/paragraphs. Similar to a research paper.
This should include lectures, readings, terms, concepts, etc.
2) Bold the class terms/concepts you use.
3) You must cite and bold, in-text, for any class material or outside sources in your Long Discussion Post. I have provided the exact in-text citation under each resource (see Modules). You must include a works cited at the end of your Discussion Forum post, but it ONLY needs to include your outside source(s). It is not necessary to include class material I have provided in the Modules in your works cited.
4) Cite your outside source(s) in-text and at the end of your post (works cited) in whatever format you like (e.g., APA, ASA, MLA, etc.)
