News Reports: Assignment Instructions

(1) Select one recent (within the last 12 months) news item from a popular news source that is relevant to the material we have covered, which is evolution and genetics. Popular news source means a newspaper, news magazine, and their online equivalents (but make sure the source is reputable).

(2) Using MS Word to complete your assignment, provide the following information about the
article, in this order:
* Source: where the article came from.
* Title of Article.
* Date of Article: remember, it must be within the last year.
* Brief Summary: summarize the content of the article in 200–250 words, single-spaced, using
* As part of your summary, you must specify the article’s relevance to the area of the course
that it addresses. Make it obvious by having a sentence that starts “This article is relevant
because …”
* Location—using a world map as your guide, describe the geographical location where the
story took place, being as specific as possible; for example: North America, Midwestern
United States, southern tip of Illinois, in the town of Carbondale. This can sometimes be hard
to identify: science takes place in the field and in the lab. For this part of the assignment, we
want to know where the science was conducted—not necessarily where the scientists who
conducted it are located. Sometimes, these two things are the same. For example, if the
story discusses lab work, then the lab is probably located at the university where one of the
scientists works. But, if the story discusses fieldwork, then where in the field? If you’d like to
include a map, with the location marked on it, paste it into the MS Word doc at the end.
(3) Copy of Original Article: a copy of the article must be included with your summary. The best way
to do this is to take a screen shot of the online version and paste it into a separate Word doc.
(4) You must turn in each report on the day of the exam on that subject, as indicated in the
syllabus, except the last report, which is due the last day of lecture. Five points will be
subtracted for each day that the news report is late. There will be a D2L dropbox for each
assignment. Use this dropbox to turn in the assignment. Do not wait until the last minute to do
this, because we will not accept technology failure as a valid excuse for late assignments.
