Tiger bites by Lucia Berlin: A Literary Analysis

Select a literary short story published in 2020 that you find particularly compelling. Select a story that affects you both intellectually and emotionally. I recommend selecting a story that you might find puzzling or controversial. This will help you find topics to explore that relate to questions like the following: Why does this story matter? What does it all mean? What literary characteristics contribute to my interpretation of the story? Remember the story may invite multiple interpretations. I encourage you to discuss undecidable aspects of the story.

Write a 2-3 page analysis that develops and defends a thesis about the poems overall meaning and importance, using course concepts and literary terminology to illustrate your ideas. I recommend focusing on 1-2 literary concepts, but you may find it necessary to touch on other concepts, for example if your essay focuses on symbols in a story, sometimes exploring the setting might help.

Your analysis must have an and appropriate, original title; contain an introduction (with an explicit, assertive thesis), several body paragraphs supporting the thesis, an appropriate concluding paragraph; and avoid use of I or you throughout. Be sure to use appropriate topic sentences and transitions to guide the reader.

Include evidence or examples from the specific text or texts that you are writing about. Remember to incorporate sources correctly: use signal phrases and document with parenthetical citations and a Work or Works Cited reference at the end of the essay.

Note: This is not a research essay; the only texts used should be the short story youve selected, our textbook for reference material, and possibly a literary glossary (there are several available as ebooks in the library).
