OBJECTIVE:

TOPIC:
Unlike Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl,” Raymond Carver’s “Popular Mechanics” is not ambiguous in terms of the zeitgeist that produced it. It is clearly Post-Modern, meaning that it is a fictional work that is dark and without hope.
Please reread “Popular Mechanics,” your critical articles and the “Professor’s Notes” concerning this literature.
After you have looked back over these, please spend time pre-writing or thinking about symbols in this story, its Post-Modern characteristics (think of length, punctuation, and ending), and its use of revised myth.
