Understanding & Exploring the Connection Between Social Action and Social Movements

Identify any issue related to gender, sexuality, and justice that we have addressed in class thus
far, either through the readings/case studies weve examined or through class discussion. Some
examples include: the embodiment of colonization, environmental justice and Indigenous rights
through gender and sexuality, gender based violence, and pronography vs. the erotic. Once you
have determined an issue of interest, you will then
Choose a specific social action that has already been done in response to this issue.
The action could be a hashtag (e.g. #MeToo), starting a petition, starting a group or
organization (e.g. Black Lives Matter), starting a protest (e.g. Stonewall Riots),
performing a song (e.g. Strange Fruit, Billie Holiday), or organizing a dialogue.
After determining the social action related to your chosen issue, conduct an analysis of the social
action, the rationale for its use (if it wasnt spontaneous), and how it connects to your chosen
social issue. Your paper should address and directly answer the following questions:
Which theories from class frame the social action? Please explain.
Discuss the connection of your specific action to the larger social justice movement.
What is the historical context of this action and movement?
Has the social action been carried out in other contexts?
Was it successful? Why? Were any adjustments made between past
implementation and current implementation? Why?
Who does/did the social action affect? How do you know they were affected?
What were the intended and unintended consequences of engaging in this form of
social action or protest?
Why do you think the social action you are analyzing is an effective (or
ineffective) form of demonstration? What evidence supports your position?
How does the action work in todays climate (i.e. activism during the time of COVID,
following a major election, etc.)?
What are the distinctions between virtual activism versus marching or in-person
protest?
According to your personal perspective, which are more effective and why?
What are your recommendations for leaders in the social movement you are looking at,
based on your analysis?
What new action(s) would you propose?
What are innovative ideas for virtual/remote activism?
In addition to hashtags and other work that youve analyzed, what else should
people/movements be doing?
