Examine the context in which the person was enslaved. How did the slave trade operate in the relevant region? Who was involved in it? What processes led to enslavement such as kidnapping, warfare, judicial processes, or other? What work did slaves do? Did they have a chance of gaining freedom through redemption or emancipation or escape? How was the experience of women different from men, and children from adults? How did enslaved people assert their humanity, try to recreate community and social bonds, or resist? What else can you say about the narrative or article in question? Note, there are many other relevant books and articles that are not included in the Resource List.
