What are the factors that led up to termination with your client?

The Process of Termination

1. In an introductory paragraph, talk about termination as the central theme of this paper. Share a personal memory or experience that you have had with having to say goodbye to someone important to you. Use this personal experience as a jumping off point for the remainder of your paper. (This should be brief.)

2. Choose a client (individual, family or group) from your current caseload. Briefly describe this client. (Demographics, presenting problem, goals, etc.) [Try to write about a client you have not already written about or presented.]

3. Provide a discussion of the chronology of your work with your client. In other words, if you were to look back of your work together, what would stand out as important? Why? [Be specific.]

4. What are the factors that led up to termination with your client? [For many of you, termination may happen because you are leaving; for others, there may be other reasons.]

5. What does the literature say about the concept of termination? Why is this topic so important to social work? What are elements to pay attention to in the process of termination? [Pull from your texts.]

6. Talk in detail about your experience of discussing termination with your client. How did you prepare? How did you feel? What did you anticipate your clients reaction to be? What do you think will be especially hard? What do you think will be especially rewarding? [Pull from the literature.]

7. Include a page or so where you either present a section of a process recording where you talked about termination with this client or create your own dialogue of a session with your client where you talked about termination. Include your reactions to this conversation with your client. (Another option here is to include part of a supervisory session with your field instructor where you talked about the process of termination.)

8. How do you think your assessment of your client, your ability to engage with your client, the goals you and your client set, and your clients progress will influence the termination process? [Pull from the literature.]

9. How do you feel about saying goodbye to this client? What have you learned from her or him (or them)? What will you take with you to your next placement? What do you wish you had handled the process differently? [Be very specific.]

10. End with a concluding paragraph that identifies any connections you may be able to make between your own experiences of saying good-bye to someone and the process of termination with your client, i.e. any effect this may have had on your interventions with the client or any personal issues that were reawakened by your termination work with the client.
