Topic question: In your view (not Marxs), what are the implications of Marxs claim that Religious suffering is at the same time an expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the sentiment of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people (Marx-Engels Reader, p. 54)?

MAKE SURE YOUR ARGUMENT IS ORIGINAL. MAKE SURE YOUR THESIS IS UNDERLINE AND HIGHLIGHTED.
Your primary task in these essays is to advance an argument about the implications of one of Marxs claims. This means several things. First, you must advance a position with which someone could disagree (as opposed to statements of fact or statements of opinion). This is partly how you ensure your argument is original to you rather than a summary of someone elses. Second, it means you must provide evidence from our text in the form of direct quotations in support of your argument. There is no magical minimum or maximum number of quotations. Use as many, or as few, as you need. Third, every point you make in the supporting paragraphs of your essay must in some way support the thesis statement. If, after completing your paper, you discover sentences or paragraphs that dont obviously and coherently relate to the thesis statement, re-write or discard them. Fourth, beware of paragraphs that are too descriptive and therefore not sufficiently argumentative. A sentence or two of background information is helpful here and there but do not fall into the trap of repeating the arguments from the texts. Im familiar with Marxs writings and I know what he has to say. For purposes of these essays, I am the only audience you need to worry about. Therefore, what interests me most are your arguments and what you have to say. Language that reinforces your argument (as opposed to summarizing that of Marx) should make up the vast majority of your essay.
Finally, there should be a grand total of ONE question mark in your essaythe one that comes at the end of your topic question. DO NOT pose additional questions along the way, especially ones whose answers you think are so obvious that they dont require actual responses from you. If you look carefully, youll notice that questions such as these are actually statements. They should therefore be phrased accordingly.
