Entering the Conversation
Already, questions arose in class about our shared topic of inquiry for Unit 1health care in the United States. What are the problems facing health care today? Why does the United States trail other developed countries with regard to mortality rates? Within the United States, why are there such wide disparities in health care and wellness? Do you see the inequities within health care subsiding in the near future, or are the problems plaguing health care in the United States going to persist? Whose interests are served by the current structure and hierarchy of health care in the United States? What roles do profit and capitalism play in health care? Is there a need to return the focus of health care back to the patient and the patients needs?
We will continue asking similar questions as we continue in Unit 1. In addition to Reading 1 (our article from JAMA), we will have another reading (Warner) and we watched a film (Money and Medicine). So in total, we will have three shared sources for the first essay. Your essay must be two to three pages in length, and you must critically review all three sources from Unit 1. You will limit and focus your discussion by organizing your essay around one, two, or three of the questions listed above, and you will interrogate each of the sources in response to these questions. This is an argumentative paperyou are arguing for a particular way of understanding your group of texts. You should assume you are writing to an academic audience who may or may not have read your sources.
Do not think of this as a research paper (although in writing it, we are practicing skills crucial to research, which we will expand later this semester); rather, try to think of the texts and film as a way of actively entering a conversation about health care in the United States. While preparing to write, you will need to ask yourself certain questions about your sources: In what ways do these sources present similar pictures of the world? In what ways do they contradict each other? What questions or problems do they produce? Are there ways in which you very much disagree or very much agree? What are the relationships between sources? Do you see one source as more important than another? Do you see sides forming?
Your discussion of these texts will move beyond summary and beyond what has been said in our class discussions; you will give your own, original take on the texts you have chosen.
