Portfolio Activiy 3
Chapter 8: Defining a Philosophy of Education
Note: Important activity for ITEP students/ your educational philosophy statement is part of the application packet.
(Portfolio Activity #3) (Chapter 8) Designing a School According to ONE philosphy (NOT NECESSARILY YOUR OWN)
This activity is designed to
(1) help you understand the concepts and beliefs of the philosophies covered in the text
(2) provide you with an opportunity to visualize how these philosophies would affect education and schools.
(3) first, concentrate on ONE philosophy so that a move towards developing an eclectic philosophy will be influenced by foundational knowledge of educational philosophies as separate entities.
Directions:
Select a philosophy (essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, existentialism, and social reconstructionism etc. )
Construct and design a visual of the school based on the given philosophy.
Use symbols, a diagram, photos, a physical representation, (try smilebox.com for great collage ideas) to address the following : (in other words your symbols, pictures graphics can touch on the points you see below; there should be a minimum use of words/ labels, bulleted phrases, titles are fine, but from your graphic representation we should see these these aspects of the philosophy you select:
– What is the role of your school?
– What is the purpose of education in this school?
– What is the physical environment of the school?
– What is the academic curriculum? Which courses are required? Which, if any, are electives?
– Which extracurricular activities are emphasized?
– What rules, rituals, and behaviors dominate the hidden curriculum? (hidden curriculum= those aspects of a learning environment that are not academic subjects but more about interactions between students and students, students and teachers).
– Is your school concerned with equal educational opportunity?
note: pay close attention to the desk arrangement, where the teacher stands, other physical indicators of the philosophy you’ve chosen to symbolize.
Remember, this is not necessarily YOUR own educational philosophy (which might end up being a mixture of several philosophies) but rather a symbolic representation of one of the philosophies we are reading about this week.
Your creation should not be dominated by text, but rather by a structure, or diagram, with components labeled with identifying phrases, words, labels. THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL PRESENT (show and tell) for the midterm presentation (no more than one minute); This is what you will upload to the designated spot.
For the video clip, don’t just show your creation.. you also have to be in the picture.
Some suggestions if you want to use these to help with your portfolio activity; This does not mean that you must or should only use computer graphics to express and represent your thoughts/ collages, real photos, stick figures, toothpicks, anything to make your drawing mutli-dimensional work just as well.
create a classroom: some links that may help:

As long as you follow instructions, have the name of the represented philosophy visible on your creation, everyone can do this, with or without artistic talent. Most students use stick figures and the web site aides referenced on the previous page. Some students produce structures and charts.
I’ve attached some examples for you.
