The Seven Questions Below are Broken up into Symbolism, Word Usage, and Poetic Devices
Symbolism Questions 1-4
For questions one through four, you will need to conduct a little research. Use a search engine and type in symbol dictionary and whatever word for which you are seeking to uncover symbolic meaning.
1. What is the Symbolic meaning of scythe? I don’t want literal. How does it relate to the poem? Explain.
2. Why black horses? Locate symbolism of black and black horses specifically. How does it relate to the poem? Explain.
3. Rat symbolism? How does it relate to the poem? While you could certainly use a symbol dictionary to get more insight, think in terms of what the rat might symbolize in the poem. Explain.
4. What might the machine that runs over the rat symbolize? Who/what would not care about the death he/it had caused, going on with his/its business as usual? “Continue cutting weeds and shade.” You’ll have to look over question 3 responses to see if you can base your response on your classmate(s) response(s) to #3.
Word Usage Question 5
5. For question five use a dictionary to Define Reapertry for three separate definitions. How do these three definitions add levels of meaning to the poem?
Poetic Devices Questions 6 and 7
6. Your lit text has a glossary of literary terms in the back. You can also Google the terms in questions six and seven.
What is onomatopoeia? Locate two instances of onomatopoeia in the poem. There is one that fits the definition perfectly and other instances where groups of words fulfill the definition. Explain how the onomatopoeia adds to the poem…specifics, please.
7. Your lit text has a glossary of literary terms in the back. You can also Google the terms in questions six and seven. Define cacophony. Locate lines or words that sound cacophonic in the poem. How do the cacophonic sounds relate to the poem? Explain how cacophony adds to the poem? Specifics, please.
