Finish the worksheets and then For this project, you will compare and contrast two poets, and examples of their work, of your choice. You will tell about the poets life and experiences, analyse samples of their poetry, and show why and how their work is important.
In choosing your poets, please pick at least one who is active in the present era (1990s – 2019). Please choose poets who lived in different eras (times in history), or in different places around the world. You may choose poets you are already aware of, or, you may choose one(s) new to you.
1. Poets: Choose 2 Poets you wish to focus on. For each poet:
Explain why you chose to focus on this poet. (What drew you to his or her work? Why)
Give a brief synopsis of their
Socio-cultural background – Where and when did they live and write?
Era and context of creativity – What was going on in the world at that time? How does their poetry connect to this? Why?
Chosen style(s) of poetry – What are the advantages and/or restrictions of this type of poetry? Why?
Common topics and themes of poetry – What was the poet connecting to? Why?
Explain why you think this poet is an important voice. What is he or she trying to say? Why should we listen?
2. Poetry: Choose 2-3 poems (4 total) that are representative of each poets works. For each poem:
Explain why you chose this poem. What caught your attention? Why?
Give a brief explanation of:
Style and/or form of the poem – what is the style? why does the poet use this form?
Literary devices present (4 minimum per poem) – what is the device? what is the purpose of each one?
Topics and Theme(s) of the poem – what is the poet talking about? why?
Explain the value or importance of this poem, in you opinion. What can these poems teach us, or connect us to? Why and How is this necessary?
3. Comparison and Contrast
After presenting the poets and their poems, your job is to analyse the similarities and differences between the poets and their work. Look at the information you have compiled about the poets and their poems.
Your comparision should discuss:
Place and Time – How are these similar or different? How does this affect their work?
Common style and themes of poetry – How are these similar or different? How does this affect our understanding of their work?
Topics, style and themes of chosen poems – How do these compare or differ? How does this affect their audience?
4. Works Cited: Using MLA format, please cite all sources used for research, influence and or visuals in this assignment. This will be included as a separate page at the end of your assignment. If you choose to create a PowerPoint style or video presentation, please submit as a separate document (.docx or .pdf form)
5. Organization
You may organize your project in any way you wish. It may be submitted as a written document, in PowerPoint style presentation (or other similar platform), or, as a presentation given through video (uploaded to Youtube, or similar platform). All analysis must be your own thinking. Research should only be done to find infromation about the life and context of your poets, and in finding examples of their work. All analysis should be your own thinking and explanation.
6. Audio Visual Elements
You should also include audio and/or visual elements to add interest to your work. These may include images of your poet, their life, or details pertinent to understanding them, and audio clips of your poet reading, or of events related to their work. Whatever you include, please remember to properly cite the sources of each element.
