Your short essays must be double-spaced and in Times 12-point font, with 1.25-inch margins. At the start of your answer to each question, give the letter of the question youre answering and be sure to provide the text of the question in full (note: you may do this by cut-&-pasting it). Put answers to both questions in the same file, rather than in two separate files.
ANSWER BOTH QUESTIONS:
A) How did the various changes that occurred over the course of the medieval and early modern periods (for example, social, economic, cultural, religious, etc.) affect women? Select what you see as the five most important changes during this period, and write an essay answering this question, being sure, for each change, to discuss how it affected (or did not affect) women of each of the Three Estates of medieval and early modern Europe, using specific examples. You must back up your points with brief quotes from at least 4 primary sources. (between 2 and 3 pages)
B) Do you think that “feminism” can be said to exist before the French Revolution? Explain and justify your answer, briefly discussing the existence (or lack thereof) of feminism in the ancient period, Middle Ages, early modern period, and French Revolution, and supporting your answer with as much evidence and as many examples as possible. You must back up your points with brief quotes from at least 2 primary sources. (between 1 and 2 pages)
(Note: you may look up the word “feminism” in a dictionary and briefly quote the definition if you like, as long as you cite it; this is the only exception to the rule that you cannot use web or print sources from outside the class on this exam. If you do this, though, use & cite the definition!)
