There are two essay questions.
Length for each essay: 2-3 pages (700-850 words, double-spaced, use Times New Roman 12 pt. for font and font size).
1. In this course, we have examined how China, Japan, and Korea underwent dramatic changes over the course of the 19th century. In your essay, name five major historical events that occurred in China, Japan, or Korea in the 19th century, and discuss in detail two of the events that you consider them to be the most consequential for changing the historical courses of not only the country but also that of East Asia as a whole. Explain clearly and adequately the large historical backgrounds in which the events took place, the causes, the impact of the events, and the reasons you believe they represented the most historically consequential events in the history of 19th-century East Asia. Provide evidence from course materials, including the readings, to support your argument. Cite sources when you draw evidence from the readings. For example: (Doc. 10, p. 3); (Saikaku, p. 150). 2. From the late 13th century to the early twentieth century, Confucian ideology exercised a major influence in China, Japan, and Korea. In your essay, examine its influence by addressing the following questions: 1) How was the influence manifested in social and gender values? How did it affect lives of men and women?
2) Would you agree that women were deprived of any voice and influence in a Confucian society, and why? 3) How was the Confucian influence changed by the contact with the West in the 19thcentury? You may choose any of the two countries as your focus of discussion. Write in a clear and organized fashion, and cite concrete evidence or examples from both readings and lectures to illustrate your viewpoint. Cite sources when you draw evidence from the readings.
