Write a coherent, well-organized response to at least two of this week’s readings, on key theoretical concepts in the study of sexuality and gender and/or on the intersection of various identities with sexuality and gender.
This kind of response is meant to be analytical rather than reactive. In other words, it is not important for the purposes of this paper whether you liked or even agreed with the readings you choose. At the most basic level, your response should demonstrate your understanding of their main arguments with a very brief summary. At the next level, you should be able to articulate how these readings complement or contrast with one another, and to say something about what value they have (or don’t have; it’s okay to argue against them) for the study of sexuality and gender. For the analytical portion, you will need to go beyond just summarizing and comparing/contrasting. Consider, for example, the effect of these theories or ideas on everyday life, on public policy, and so forth.
A good strategy to take you beyond just summarizing and comparing is to look for two or more pieces that address the same concept or theory, perhaps from different perspectives. Then build your response around that idea. See me if you need suggestions for how to make this work.
Be sure to organize your essay so that it has an introduction and a conclusion, and be sure that your analysis comes from a place of scholarship. In other words, your arguments need to be supported with material from the readings themselves rather than personal opinion. Let me know if you have any questions regarding this.
