Write a draft on Breaking the Disney Spell from his book, Fairy Tale as Myth/Myth as Fairy Tale, Jack Zipes.” My professor wants you to do a close reading on this fairy tale for now but eventually this draft will turn into a 5 page paper. i love your work from our last assignment which is why i requested you again!!
I will send you to instructions. One will be what my professor is looking for in a “close reading” and the other one will be the overall assignment
Close Reading:
Reading closely is a carefulre-reading of a specific moment of the text that youre interested in.
Youslow downand look at words that seem intriguing, strange, weird, confusingfor whatever
reason. This is about language, not plot. You look up words in the Oxford English Dictionary to find their various meanings, and consider how different meanings change your interpretation of the moment.
You underline, make notes, and raise questions in the text. YOU MUST WRITE ON THE PAGE! Write
down patterns that emergerepeated striking or suggestive language, images, problems.
What I’m sending now is the actual instructions for this assignment because this 2 page draft will eventually have to be a 5 page paper but TODAY we’re just writing a draft a 2 page close reading.
In the chapter, Breaking the Disney Spell from his book, Fairy Tale as Myth/Myth as Fairy Tale, Jack Zipes writes that, Disney employed the most up-to-date technological means and used his own American grit and ingenuity to appropriate the European fairy tales. His technical skills and ideological proclivities were so consummate that his signature has obfuscated the names of Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Collodi. (Zipes, 72)
In other words, Disney makes fairytales his own property by using a set of features and capabilities that film technology possesses that the written text does notparticularly sound and moving image. Any such tool, feature, or capability that a medium (a system through which communications occurprint, radio, television, internet) allows an agent to accomplish their purposes is called an affordance.
Your second paper asks you to advance a thesis on how the affordances of film permit a Disney animated fairytale to appropriate, transform, reinterpret or alter its source — a fairytale by the Grimm brothers or Charles Perrault.
Select a moment from Cinderella by Perrault or Little Snow White by the Grimm brothers that interests you. Read that moment closely and formulate your interpretation of it and its significance to the story as a whole. Then, perform a visual analysis of the corresponding scene in the Disney animated film: how has Disney transformed that scene through the affordances of film and how does that change the fairytale and its meaning? Do you agree with Zipes that Disney has reduced the complexity of the fairytale and chosen to celebrate patriarchy, female suffering and helplessness, hard work, or empty patriotism. Or does Disney use the affordances of film to reveal complexities you may not have considered when first reading? Or a bit of both?
Do not replicate Zipes work by focusing on a comparison that he makes, unless you are going to disagree with his interpretation.
