Narrative Criticism
The collaborative worldbuilding heuristic is a tool that not only allows for the creation of worlds but also the critical reception and analysis of narrative. In this assignment, students are tasked with composing a narrative criticism on a narrative of their choice and creating a script/brief video essay on their findings. Students are also encouraged to pay particular attention to the setting and substructures of the world as a potential framework for their analysis.
Project Components
Purpose: To develop an insightful narrative criticism script and video essay for a selected narrative by analyzing the components of its storytelling in relation to an identified objective.
Audience: Your instructor & classroom community
Genre: A Narrative Criticism should include (Foss, 2009):
Introduction: discussion of the research question and the research question’s significance.
Contextualization: a description of your artifact(s) and their contexts what is the general synopsis of your artifact and what kind of artifact is it.
Methodology: a description of your method of criticismin this case, narrative criticism and the specific framework you are using to conduct your criticismdeconstruction via the worldbuilding substructures.
Findings: a report of the findings of the analysis, in which you reveal the objective of the narrative, the key features used to accomplish the objective, and/or alignment between the objective and the features
Note: The features you are placing in conversation with the objective are the foundation and substructures of the fictional world. You are working to answer how the components of the setting contribute to the objective you have identified.
