It is also important that the coins retain their surface detail formany years while in circulation, which implies resistance to wear.(i) How would you assess thewear rates and wear mechanisms of coins in use? (ii) How would you attempt to predict thewear rate of a new alloy proposed for use in coinage?
Assignment Part B (50 %)A collapse of tall lighting column poses major risks and safety to the road users. Possiblefailure mechanisms of such structure involve fatigue and corrosion. In this assignment, (i) youare asked to survey factors that affect the structural integrity in relation to fatigue strengthand corrosion resistance of the lighting column. (ii) How would you assess failure rates andmechanisms due to fatigue and corrosion of the lighting column in use? (iii) You are also askedto suggest and elaborate the laboratory tests that can be used to understand the fatigue andcorrosion behaviour of components in use. (iv) Discuss and propose new materials, consideringthe costs involved, to improve the mechanical strength of the lighting column.
