Intentional food contamination can happen within one country or among countries. That necessitates the implementation of food defense at national as well as at international levels. Food trade between countries need to be regulated and monitored to address the issue of food contamination. Each country has its local agencies and institutions that handle food defense at both national and international levels. During the past five weeks you learned about the agencies and institutions in the USA that handle the issues of food defense.
The assignment for this week of the course attempts to emphasize the fact that food defense is a global concern.
Study a food defense plan from another country or region and compare to the US. Specifically:
(1) Select a country or region (see examples posted in the readings) and identify their food system in broad strokes (i.e. what are their major agricultural imports/exports, do they have a strong food manufacturing industry, what government agency regulates their food, etc).
(2) Briefly describe its approach to food defense in 3-5 main points (note that some entities refer to food defense by other names).
(3) Describe at least one weakness of their plan.
(4) Describe at least one strength of their plan.
(5) Explain what, in your view, the US could learn from their plan.
