Now that we have practiced fiction analysis together, it is your turn to demonstrate this skill in the form of an essay. Weve examined many literary elements of this genre, such as character, plot, setting, narration and point of view, symbolism, figurative language, and diction and syntax, which all help us to understand the larger themes and ideas at work.
The Assignment
For this essay, you will conduct an in-depth analysis of one work of fiction that we have read, focusing on how its Gothic elements reveal a deeper meaning or theme in the text. Here are key Gothic elements you can choose from (don’t try to cover all of them; just choose those elements that are most significant in the story you’re writing about):
Decay
Ambiguity
Transgression (particularly with relation gender and sexuality)
Alienation
Monstrousness
The Uncanny
The Sublime
Isolation
The Arcane/Archaic/Romanticized Past
Madness
You may write about any of the short stories we have read, which are:

Your job will be to craft an essay that incorporates the use of one or more Gothic elements into an argument about the larger meaning of the text and analyze how it uses these Gothic elements to communicate its meaning.
Assignment Requirements
Your essay should be at least 5 full double-spaced pages with 1 side margins, 1 header and footer margins, Times New Roman, 12 pt font.
Your introduction should offer a thesis that gives your readers a main claim or guiding idea which will be developed throughout.
Your essay must include direction quotations from the text and should include summary where relevant, to provide context about the story/poem.
Though you are not required to use outside sources for this essay (the only required source is the text you are analyzing), you are encouraged to consult reference materials and scholarly works and refer to them where necessary. If you do so, you must cite all sources in MLA format.
Cite all sources in MLA format (in text), in addition to a Works Cited page. Use Purdue OWL (linked on Canvas) to look up proper MLA in-text citations and Works Cited formatting.
Proofread for mistakes and edit for clarity. Consider paragraph organization and appropriate transitions to lead your reader through your discussion.
