Write an essay in which you situate the film in its historical and/or cultural context.

Instructions

Choose an American feature film released between 1970 and 2010 and write a 3-4-page essay in which you situate the film in its historical and/or cultural context. Using what you have learned about film history from this period in class and in your readings, how typical or atypical is your film for the time period in which it was made? Be specific with examples. Does it utilize film techniques or technologies that were emerging during the 1970s-2010? If yes, which techniques specifically? Does its plot incorporate or address societal/cultural concerns that were important during the period? If so, which specific concerns, and how do those concerns reflect the period? Try to think abstractly to connect your specific film to what weve learned about that period of film history in class.

In other words, consider your film to be an artifact from its historical era. If you are an archaeologist uncovering the film for the first time, what can the films visual elements, aural elements, and narrative tell you about the time period and culture in which the film was made? Please DO NOT consult any outside sources in the writing of this assignment. I want you to use your own abstract thinking to make connections between what you see/hear on the screen and what we learned about in class. Consider this assignment a way for you to show your grasp of the stylistic and technological developments/characteristics of specific decades in film history, in this case the 1970s-2010. Your paper SHOULD NOT be a plot summary (a summary of what happens in the film) or a production history (a behind-the-scenes history of how the film was made). Likewise, your paper should also not be a personal reflection, in which you share your own views of the film or its quality. This is a formal, history paper and should be written as such.

Example: Godzilla symbolizes different social concerns that existed in the Japanese culture, such as the nuclear holocaust. The producer, Tanaka, states that the movies central theme was to address the bomb terror that man had created and was used to cause social unrest among countries. The movie portrays Americas actions of testing nuclear explosives that cause the emergence of Godzilla. The monsters emergence implies natures reaction to human actions. The Godzilla is perceived to be a victim and represents the Japanese experience of World War II and the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombing. Thus, the movie serves as a cultural reflection of Japans social challenges during the 1940s and the 1960s.
