Paper II: Understanding and Integrating History & Social Context
Part I:
Utilize this Stanford Encyclopedia reference and any other resources you find helpful (media
and popular writing, academic articles, newspaper and magazine reporting) to construct a
timeline of important developments in trans*/transgender history. Though some dates are
included in the Stanford Encyclopedia reference, your timeline should include information and
dates beyond what is mentioned there.
Your timeline should begin as early as possible (depending on the earliest reference or piece of
information you are able to find) and continue to the present day. You can/should include
medical developments, celebrity coming out moments, important policy changes, etc.
Your timeline should also show your creativity. Incorporate pictures, artwork, font colors, etc. to
make your timeline visually appealing to a viewer. It is fine if your timeline is created as a PPT
slide or extends beyond a single page if you choose to create it in Microsoft Word.
Part II:
After (or during) the process of putting your timeline together, please watch all three of the
videos at the links provided; meaning youll watch four videos in total:
1. Transforming Gender: https://youtu.be/B67OVJTyV0I
2. Trans Women of Color & Violence:

3. Genderqueer Parenting:

81
After watching the three videos, then research and watch a video that you find on your own:
4. Individual Transition Story: A video of an individual narrating their transition story
that you locate on your own and watch via youtube or another platform
Consider both your selected historical materials and the videos, then write a three to four page
reflection paper on the videos incorporating information from your timeline research and
applicable/relevant course readings. Be sure to include the link to your chosen video in your
paper.
You should start your paper by defining Transgender, Gender Non-Binary, or any other required
terms for your reflection. Be thoughtful about the terms you are using in your paper and make
sure they relate accurately to the people you are referencing. You can also use the Stanford
Encyclopedia reference and any other resources you find helpful (media and popular writing,
academic articles, newspaper and magazine reporting, identity terms reviewed in class).
A General Guide to Reflection Papers:
Critically READ and WATCH the assigned and selected materials
Then, WRITE your reflection. It should explore the meaning of the materials, using your
own words in essay form. Do not summarize; instead, analyze.
Some QUESTIONS you might consider:
What are the main ideas of the materials? Why are they significant?
How do the materials connect to the larger themes of the course?
What is the perspective of the narrators in the materials? Why is their perspective
significant?
How do you personally relate to the materials? We can all relate to some aspect of
the experiences discussed in the materials.
Reminder: the reflection paper component should be three to four double spaced pages, typed
with Times New Roman, 12pt font. The document should have 1 margins.
As a reminder, when you cite academic articles, websites, newspaper articles, etc. in order to
support your timeline and your reflection paper, be sure to cite them appropriately. Any in-text
and reference page citations should be formatted in APA (American Psychological
Association) style. There is no minimum number of citations for this assignment.
You do not need to provide a title page or an abstract for this assignment.
