Write one or two brief paragraphs summarizing the episode or movie as objectively as possible.

(Adapted from Empoword writing textbook)

1) Find a text you wish to write about. You may choose a book, story, article, TV show, or movie. It could be anything not previously assigned or discussed for this class (Orange is the New Black and Black Panther are off the table, since these texts were discussed at length in articles we read). The following steps are for a movie or TV episode but can be adapted for a written text if that’s what you have chosen to write about.

2) Watch it once all the way through, taking notes using the double-column structure.

3) Watch it once more, pausing and rewinding as necessary, adding additional notes.

4) Write one or two brief paragraphs summarizing the episode or movie as objectively as possible. Try to include the major plot points, characters, and conflicts.

5) Write a paragraph that transitions from summary to response, and then 2-3 additional paragraphs responding to specific elements of the text: what were your reactions to the episode or movie? What do you think produced those reactions? What seems troubling or problematic? What elements of form and language, and/or set and acting were striking? How does the episode or movie relate to your lived experiences?

Format:

Your paper should be 3-4 pages in length in MLA format: 12 pt. font, one-inch margins, double spaced. No cover page.

At the end of your paper, include a Process Statement in which you articulate your writing and revising process. What was challenging, surprising, or enjoyable about this assignment?

Your paper should include:

a clearly worded thesis statement
a brief yet clear summary (someone not familiar with the text should have enough information about it from your summary to make sense of the rest of your essay. However, it should also be brief and only cover major points)
clearly stated and explained responses to 3-4 specific elements of the text
a strong conclusion
Additionally, your paper should:

transition smoothly between well-constructed paragraphs
contain minimal run-on sentences and sentence fragments
reflect characteristics of a unique voice and style
