Write one paragraph describing a specific tool or object that you use for your skill. Include as much detail as possible.

Dear Writer…
Please note that I would need the first task answered tomorrow! Please answer the 2 questions by tomorrow, not later than 1pm. The question is about the skill you will write about and a specific moment you used that skill.

However, before, please read the written proposal instructions – since there are specific tasks you will need to write about. You will need to read this before you choose a skill you will write about.

Please read The required reading, so you know how the teacher wants us to write the “essay” There are different steps the teacher is asking for…please mark each step for me, so I can see which one is step1, step 2, and so on.

For this assignment,
you will need to identify a particular skill that you have personally developed over time.
It could be something you learned from an older family member, from friends, or in some
other context. It could be something you do with your hands, with your body, with your
voice, or with your mind.

Step #1: Brainstorm, choose a focus, and turn in the written proposal
Your first step is to brainstorm which of your skills to focus on in the essay and then
choose a particular time you used that skill to describe in detail. Once youve made your
selection, complete the Written Proposal assignment. Due by 11:59 p.m. on 01/29
Step #2 Draft the Narrative (min. 500 words)
Tell your reader a story about a specific time when you used your skill. Consider, for
example, the way that Sanders uses the story of building the wall on a specific day as a
way to unify the broader topic of his essay. Write a narrative of at least 500 words about
using your skill on a very specific occasion. Remember to be as descriptive as possible
(see the Showing vs. Telling for advice on how to show your reader). Again, using
Sanders as an example, you may wish to include references to particular tools,
sayings/terms, or practices associated with your skill. Due by 11:59 p.m. on 02/05
(Only after completing Step #2 should you move on to Step #3!)
Step #3: Craft the First Version of Essay #1 (min. 1000 words)
Now that you have written the narrative for Step #2, you have a story that will frame the
body of your essay. To turn this story into an essay, you will need to add paragraphs that
focus the readers attention on specific aspects of your skill. Write the following focused
paragraphs related to your skill:1
Body Paragraph A: Write one paragraph describing a specific tool or object that you use
for your skill. Include as much detail as possible.
Body Paragraph(s) B: Write one or more paragraphs describing how you learned your
skill over time. Who taught you? How did you practice? Etc.
Body Paragraph C: Write one paragraph explaining your skills abstract value. That is,
what have you learned from this skill that you could apply to other tasks or situations in
your life? What deeper values or lessons have you learned from your skill?
Putting It All Together for Step #3:
To incorporate these body paragraphs, you will need to break your story into two pieces
and relocate anything that seem more appropriate as a part of one of these body
paragraphs. Ask yourself where you might cut your story in half. The structure of your
final version will look like this:
Story Part I. (One or more paragraphs)
Body Paragraph A
Body Paragraph(s) B
Body Paragraph C
Story Part II. (One or more paragraphs)
The first, complete version of Essay #1 is Due by 11:59 p.m. on 02/12.
