Term Paper Project
Topic: Glacier National Park
comment: Id like to focus on the melting of the glaciers due to climate change
The purpose of this project is to conduct research and write a professional report about the physical landscape and/or environment in the context of the U.S. national park system. The park system (NPS) includes several categories, not just parks and monuments. The methodology will necessarily involve a literature review, which requires a synthesis of current thought or the historical development of contemporary ideas.
Many kinds of topics are possible, provided that the emphasis is clearly on physical landscape or the environmental issues that relate to it. For example, the paper can focus on the physical attributes (e.g., scenery, geology, landforms) of a specific NPS unit; it could even concentrate on a logical group of units (e.g., similar rocks or topography, climate, etc). Similarly, a topic about an environmental problem that relates to the physical landscape could also focus on either a specific NPS unit or a logical group. Some environmental problems conceivably involve major regions of the country or even the entire park system. T ry to choose a topic that interests you. Note, however, that topics will require formal approval (see below).
An important aspect of this project is research. The manuscript must show unequivocal evidence of genuine research and should explicitly state an overall theme or research problem. Choose the topic carefully to maintain the proper balance for an assignment accounting for a large percentage (40%) of the course grade; it should be neither too general nor too specific. The paper must not have been submitted elsewhere for a grade.
Write the manuscript in formal English and use a clear and direct writing style. Organize it logically within the context of the overall theme or research problem. The manuscript must not be an agglomeration of unrelated or vaguely associated sections tied together with transition sentences. A later handout will specify the papers required style and mechanics.
Initial Procedures
1. Identify and discuss your topic in a formal, written proposal. Approval of the proposal is necessary before proceeding further with the paper assignment. Unapproved topics will receive a grade of zero. The proposal must (a) clearly identify the topic, (b) place the topic in the context of an overall research problem or theme, (c) describe the preliminary availability of relevant professional literature or other resources, and (d) explain why you chose that topic.
2. The paper project requires a first (rough) draft. This draft will be editorially reviewed to insure that the final manuscript is acceptable. The advantages of an editorial review of the rough draft are obvious. This draft is a very important part of the overall assignment!
