Wrongfully convicted

As the cornerstone of College Composition I, students will conduct intensive semester-long research on a topic culminating in an appropriately formatted and documented 10-12 page persuasive research paper. The course emphasizes writing as a process that undergoes various stages toward completion and engages a variety of rhetorical approaches. This process-writing method gives students the tools that underlie effective academic writing and ensures adherence to the conventions of standard written English.

Apply critical reading and thinking skills to the writing and research processes.

Research Methods

Produce a substantial persuasive research essay (10-15 pages) that demonstrates the ability to:

Craft a research question and formulate a thesis that guides the research process.

Locate and evaluate sources.

Quote, paraphrase, and summarize source material.
Incorporate researched information into the students essay.
Apply a variety of rhetorical approaches as appropriate to the selected topic.
Cite sources accurately using a recognized system of documentation.

Composition / Rhetoric

Compose effective essays demonstrating an ability to:

Practice writing as a process of discovering, planning, drafting, revising, editing and proofreading
Compose a well-structured essay with a clear introduction and conclusion as well as body paragraphs that clearly and logically support the thesis.
Follow the conventions of standard written English for sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, usage, and spelling.

Address the central elements of rhetoric topic, audience, and purposeby demonstrating the ability to:

Choose a topic suited to the requirements of the research project.
Anticipate the audiences assumptions and expectations and make language/style approaches appropriate to audience and context.
Develop a purpose statement for the research project that lends itself to the development of an overall thesis.
Select the rhetorical mode(s) appropriate to meeting the writing goal.
