Toward the beginning of the first chapter of Postmodernism or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, Jameson notes that, “What has happened today is that aesthetic production today has become integrated into commodity production generally” (4). In a way, the chapter is devoted to understanding what follows from this fact–what, in other words, this fact means for painting, literature, film, and even philosophy. What does Jameson see as the consequences of the indistinction between artistic production and commodity production? What problems does it produce for culture and politics alike? And what emerges as a solution to some of these problems? Do we see any parallels between Jameson’s argument and Lerner’s novel 10:04?
