I turned to psychology after realizing that there were very few job opportunities as an artist where I lived. Being an artist is expensive in general, as it requires you to purchase materials in order to make any profit. I would see this as a personal or financial contributor to my decision to change my major from visual arts to psychology. I am uncertain if I would call this an influence, as its really more of a reality I had to come to terms with.
White and Perrone-McGovern (2017), found that financial stress had some relation to career and academic self-efficacy. This aligns with my own experience where my insecurities in financial stability with my first career choice. Something else that may have influenced me is that neither of my parents were able to go to college and earn a degree. My older sister was able to gain a masters in education, so Im not the first in my family to go to college. However, I still felt and feel some pressure to achieve more because of how much my parents sacrificed for me to succeed. However, this generational or family influence may not have as strong of a relationship with career self-efficacy as financial stress (White & Perrone-McGovern, 2017).
I do see how fretting over income could steer me down a path I regret. For instance, I could choose to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and make much more money than I currently do. A BCBA is the step above what I currently do and requires a masters degree and a passing score on the BCBA exam. However, I am uncertain if this is really something I would want. I mediate my financial influence by checking in with myself and reviewing why I feel fulfillment in working with children. I recognize that there are many careers where I could work with children, but I feel a pull towards forensic psychology. While maintain some financial influence and some realistic expectations, I want to explore that field and pursue a masters in child development and forensic psychology.
