Fifth writing assignment: 1. The general writing situation. Like the fourth essay, the last writing assignment of the semester is a research-supported argumentative essay. The topics are patriotism or fake news or political polarization. For this essay you will also need to do some online library research (such as the database opposing viewpoints or For and Against) so that you will be able to cite various views to identify the issue and to clarify what you support and what you reject. If the online library research is difficult, try to utilize the essays we have in the textbook. You are required to use at least three different sources in your essay (either direct or indirect quotations or borrowings) and to document all your sources in the MLA style. Your essay should be four pages long or longer. 2. Questions to think. With regard to the topic of fake news, think about the following situations and related questions: a) Donald Trump often associated CNN, New York Times, Washington Post, and other news organizations critical of him with fake news. In turn those who are critical of him often brand his remarks as fake news. Do you agree or disagree with this use of the term fake news? Do you see it as a major problem? Has that made you aware of any larger problem in society? b) What do scholars or activists say about the issue? Do they agree with each other or not? If not, what are the two or more sides of views on the issue? In addition to politics, are there other factors influencing the nature and direction of the discussion? c) Given your personal experience and your study of the issue through your research, what do you think should be done or not done with regard to the use of the term fake news? With regard to the topic of patriotism, think about the following questions: a) What does the term usually mean? Is it usually clear or problematic? Do you see any scenario (other than the Kaepernick situation) where this idea could be problematic and controversial? In relation to globalism, what does patriotism mean? Are the two ideas (globalism and patriotism) necessarily opposed to each other? b) What do scholars talk about the situation? Do they agree or disagree with each other? c) From the perspective of your personal situation and what you can observe around you, how do you think the idea of patriotism should be defined? Why? With regard to the topic of political polarization, think about the following questions: a) What do you think about American politics today? Do you see the division as a result of economics, race, education, religion, age, and geography? b) What do scholars talk about the situation? Do they agree or disagree with each other? c) From the perspective of your personal situation and what you can observe around you, how do you think about political polarization in the country? 3. Essay organization. Pay attention to the title and the division of the essay into an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion. Make sure that there is a progression of ideas or a movement of things toward a certain climax. You must have a thesis which should be used to help anchor your entire discussion
