Was there anything that caused you to view the world around you differently or examine a topic from a different perspective?

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, review this weeks readings, guidance, and announcements. Reflect on what you found interesting, surprising, or confusing.

This discussion forum is an opportunity for you to explore topics that interest you, share critical insights and questions that you are working with, share your struggles and triumphs, and discuss difficulties that may have arisen this week. Your initial post should describe your experiences in the course this past week, prompting further discussion. Address at least two of the following questions:

Was there anything that caused you to view the world around you differently or examine a topic from a different perspective?
What struck you in particular as you explored the course materials this week?
Do you have questions that your classmates might be able to help you with? (If you have a question for the instructor, be sure to contact your instructor via email).
In Week 1, you watched two videos, Corporate Anthropology: Michael Henderson at TEDxAuckland (Links to an external site.) and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: The Danger of a Single Story (Links to an external site.). Thinking back over those videos and what we have talked about in the last five weeks, what have you learned about your own culture? How can anthropology be relevant to your life or to your major?
Part of having the growth mindset, which we talked about in the Post Your Introduction forum, is to learn from the feedback and critiques you get from your instructor and classmates. Review your feedback on the Week 3 Worksheet and the Week 4 Self-Reflexive Journal. How will you incorporate your instructors comments on the Final Research Paper? (If you have a specific question about your feedback, be sure to contact your instructor via email).

What are the implications of Marxs claim that Religious suffering is at the same time an expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering.

Topic question: In your view (not Marxs), what are the implications of Marxs claim that Religious suffering is at the same time an expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the sentiment of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people (Marx-Engels Reader, p. 54)?

Instructions:
USE MUST USE SOME QUOTES AND SOURCES FROM: Robert C. Tucker, ed., The Marx-Engels Reader (Norton, 2d
MAKE SURE YOUR ARGUMENT IS ORIGINAL. MAKE SURE YOUR THESIS IS UNDERLINE AND HIGHLIGHTED.
Your primary task in these essays is to advance an argument about the implications of one of Marxs claims. This means several things. First, you must advance a position with which someone could disagree (as opposed to statements of fact or statements of opinion). This is partly how you ensure your argument is original to you rather than a summary of someone elses. Second, it means you must provide evidence from our text in the form of direct quotations in support of your argument. There is no magical minimum or maximum number of quotations. Use as many, or as few, as you need. Third, every point you make in the supporting paragraphs of your essay must in some way support the thesis statement. If, after completing your paper, you discover sentences or paragraphs that dont obviously and coherently relate to the thesis statement, re-write or discard them. Fourth, beware of paragraphs that are too descriptive and therefore not sufficiently argumentative. A sentence or two of background information is helpful here and there but do not fall into the trap of repeating the arguments from the texts. Im familiar with Marxs writings and I know what he has to say. For purposes of these essays, I am the only audience you need to worry about. Therefore, what interests me most are your arguments and what you have to say. Language that reinforces your argument (as opposed to summarizing that of Marx) should make up the vast majority of your essay.

Finally, there should be a grand total of ONE question mark in your essaythe one that comes at the end of your topic question. DO NOT pose additional questions along the way, especially ones whose answers you think are so obvious that they dont require actual responses from you. If you look carefully, youll notice that questions such as these are actually statements. They should therefore be phrased accordingly.

College-level Writing
In every Gordon Rule course at FIU, students must demonstrate college-level writing skills. College-level writing must exhibit the following characteristics:

It has clear purpose and thesis or controlling ideas.
The thesis is supported with adequate reasons and evidence.
It shows sustained analysis and critical thought.
It is organized clearly and logically.
It shows knowledge of conventions of standard written English.
It shows awareness of disciplinary conventions in regard to content, style, form, and delivery methods.
Moreover, sources must be cited as appropriate.
Thesis Statement
The thesis is the central idea of your paper around which all your evidence and claims are organized. Every single paragraph should be dedicated in a clear way to proving your thesis. In your essay, the thesis should be stated as quickly and as clearly as possible. In fact, many teachers will expect your thesis statement to appear in the last sentence of your essay’s first paragraph. A vivid thesis statement will announce the steps of its argument, not just provide a flat statement of the essay’s ultimate goal. Think of the thesis as a road map that gives directions to your reader rather than as a picture of your final destination.

A good thesis should not state something that is obviously true. When your thesis is too easy to prove, your essay can become repetitive and you may feel that you do not have enough to write about. A complex thesis, on the other hand, requires you to convince your reader that your argument is logical and will reveal ideas that cannot be easily anticipated. A worthwhile thesis will always outline an argument with which a reader can readily disagree.

These are two links to guide you to write a good thesis statement:

“Tips and Examples for Writing Thesis Statements” by Purdue Online Writing Lab (Links to an external site.)
Grading Elements
When reading your essays, I will be looking at three different elements: Content, Style, and Research. You will receive a grade in each of these areas, and these grades will then be averaged together for your final essay grade.

Content
refers to the information in your paper. Is it correct? Is it detailed? Do you demonstrate basic knowledge of the religious tradition? Is this knowledge evident in your description of the service?
Style
refers to how that information is presented. This includes the way the information is organized and language skills such as spelling, grammar, and proper sentence structure.
Research
refers to the quality and quantity of your research.

You may use more than 1 source
