Precis: A Mutation in a Skin-Specific Isoform of SMARCAD1 Causes Autosomal-Dominant Adermatoglyphia

You have worked hard this semester under challenging circumstances! You have been exposed to many tools and principles of genetics and molecular genetics. Your prcis assignment involves writing a summary of one of three research articles I have chosen for you that I believe you will enjoy. The articles are attached!
I want you to write a summary of one article (one to one and one-half page single-spaced) in your own words. Part of the goal of this project is for you to acquire the skills necessary to articulate well in biology. Thus this paper must be written in your own words. Any evidence of direct transcription from your research article will be viewed as plagiarism and graded accordingly.

What is a prcis?
A prcis is a condensed restatement of an article, roughly 14 the length of the original or less. In contrast to a summary, a prcis should preserve the articles logic and emphases and include main examples where relevant. A prcis of a primary-literature scientific paper should follow the standard format: background/hypothesis, methods, results, and conclusion. The prcis should be written from the original authors point of view, without editorializing.

A prcis demonstrates that you have assimilated the key information provided in an article. Prcis can be used as briefs, but are also very similar to the first section of manuscript reviews for peer-reviewed journals. Writing a prcis (or any summary) of an article is an excellent way of learning material for the long term.

1 – Read the article carefully all the way through
2 – Consider the main points
3 – Go over the article again, jotting down the main points (NOT whole sentences)
4 Seam together the points, in order, in a logical narrative
5 Edit to place proper stress on main points, and cut out extra details
6 – Review your paper with a consultant at the writing center.

My policy on late paper assignments is as follows:
Assignments will be accepted late at a penalty of 2 points per day.

Grading Rubric:
Writing and Clarity
28

The paper follows the conventions of written English.
It is free of typographical and grammatical errors.
The syntax is excellent and the flow is logical.
It is written in the authors own words.

Evidence of an understanding of the paper and of the genetics described 25 It is apparent that the student author has understood the goals of the paper, the question(s) being asked, the tools used and the results and their significance.
Context and breadth 10
The paper has been put in the larger context of biology.

The student author may have used and cited other sources when necessary to help understand concepts that were not clear.

Discretionary 7
Discretionary points are awarded by the professor to give fair credit to students whose paper shows features absent from a number of papers or excellent examples of expectations above. Examples might be:
Stunning clarity.
Superb writing.
Particularly engaging style.

Write a mystery story. It must have a fully fleshed out main character and mystery. All of the main points of the story should be resolved by the end of the story. Once the reader is in full possession of the whole tale, it must make sense even if it makes a kind of twisted, postmodern kind of sense.

7 pages, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, Font should be Times New Roman (TNR) size 12 ,
cited in MLA (where appropriate).

Write a mystery story. It must have a fully fleshed out main character and mystery. All of the main points of the story should be resolved by the end of the story. Once the reader is in full possession of the whole tale, it must make sense even if it makes a kind of twisted, postmodern kind of sense. All facts must be correct if you dont know something, look it up.

In addition to the story, this option must include a – 1 page analysis of what you did, how you undertook the progression of the story, why you told the story the way you did, and a brief explanation of your main choices could the mystery be solved by the reader? Why did you go that way? Are there tricks that the reader wont be able to see? Why did you go that way? The best of these stories will show me that you have incorporated overall ideas of the genre from the class readings and discussions. You may not simply retell a crime/mystery that we have read or that you have heard about elsewhere (e.g. at work, in the news, or on a television show). This is your chance to be creative, so be creative.

Bidding Assignment

1. Being selected to a national team is a great honor. National team members are invited and expected to represent their country in international competition. Because major international events do not always provide prize money or appearance fees, some athletes would rather attend a competition that pays for them for their work. (approximately 2 – 3 paragraphs is sufficient).

2. If a city is bidding to host the Olympic Games, what factors does the organizing committee need to consider when considering to bid for the Olympics? (approximately 2 – 3 paragraphs is sufficient).

3. In your own words (approximately 2 – 3 paragraphs) discuss some instances in bidding for sports that went corrupt for major sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup, the Olympic Games or another mega sporting event. Discuss why this bidding and awarding was unethical and why.

4. In your own words (approximately 2 – 3 paragraphs) explain what “Sport For All” is? “Sport For All” is. This is also sometimes called “Sports For Development.”

Event Management

After the successful marketing and public relations campaigns your company created, the local Little League baseball organization has contacted the athletic director about using the University’s facilities for the opening day ceremonies. This is a first for the school, so they have again contracted your company to help them manage the event.

The opening ceremonies include an introduction of the 10 teams in the league, recognition of last year’s champion by the city’s mayor, and the tip-off game between last year’s first and second place finishers. Area dignitaries will attend the ceremonies (you pick them!), and someone will be honored by throwing out the first pitch. Remember your client is located in Mobile, AL.

You need to create an event management plan for the day, which includes a timeline of the day’s activities, location of emergency services, concessions, parking, security, restrooms, etc. Be sure to include handling of the dignitaries.

The attached event planning booklet is a good resource to use in planning your event.
