Cause and Effect Essay
We are now starting to write essays that will make us think deeply on your topic.
You may develop your essay in 1. Causal Chain.
2. Causes of a topic
Or 3. Effects of a topic
1. Causal Chain within a given frame of time.
When you write a Cause and Effect essay, you may choose to concentrate on both important causes and effects of a particular topic thus going through a causal chain. You will need to choose a window of time because the chain can be endless. Here is an example:
Students who have a family, work a job, and go to school experience enormous stress; therefore, they cannot avoid letting all three affect each other.
Let us take the incident of a man working a job at Price Chopper where he is having endless problems with his boss, who thinks that the man is not getting enough work done. Let us call the man Joe. He goes home at night with stress, as a result of his boss screaming at him in front of customers. When he goes home the stress, which was a result, now causes him to be angry at his little sons rambunctious activity. He has a headache. This causes him to be mean to his kid and wife. Because he was mean to his wife and child, they are angry, and she leaves him and takes the child with her.
This is the causal chain. Notice effects become causes: stress becomes the cause for his angry at home; the result of his angry becomes the cause for his wife leaving him. This is a simple topic and purposefully chosen, so you can understand the concept. Often the causal chain essay is used for historical and medical topics.
You will want to choose a time frame for a causal chain or else you could go on endlessly.
Take each situation, whether it is a cause or effect and develop it either through narrative, description, exemplification, process analysis, comparison and contrast, or definition. Use your research material in every paragraph to back up your material
2) Either causes or effects in a topical organization.
You may choose to develop only the causes or effects and structure your essay topically. If you wanted to examine the effects of on businesses leaving Utica, you could do it topically: educational environment, appearance of the city, and crime increase.
Again the various patterns of developments will work here too: descriptive, narrative, exemplification, process analysis, comparison and contrast, or definition. Use your research material in every paragraph to back up your opinions.
To find topics, brainstorm for ideas: what do I want to explore about different topics, the family, religion, education, wars, any diseases, suicide, parks, etc.
