Cause and Effect Essay

We are now starting to write essays that will make us think deeply on your topic.

You may develop your essay in 1. Causal Chain.

2. Causes of a topic

Or 3. Effects of a topic

1. Causal Chain within a given frame of time.

When you write a Cause and Effect essay, you may choose to concentrate on both important causes and effects of a particular topic thus going through a causal chain. You will need to choose a window of time because the chain can be endless. Here is an example:

Students who have a family, work a job, and go to school experience enormous stress; therefore, they cannot avoid letting all three affect each other.

Let us take the incident of a man working a job at Price Chopper where he is having endless problems with his boss, who thinks that the man is not getting enough work done. Let us call the man Joe. He goes home at night with stress, as a result of his boss screaming at him in front of customers. When he goes home the stress, which was a result, now causes him to be angry at his little sons rambunctious activity. He has a headache. This causes him to be mean to his kid and wife. Because he was mean to his wife and child, they are angry, and she leaves him and takes the child with her.

This is the causal chain. Notice effects become causes: stress becomes the cause for his angry at home; the result of his angry becomes the cause for his wife leaving him. This is a simple topic and purposefully chosen, so you can understand the concept. Often the causal chain essay is used for historical and medical topics.

You will want to choose a time frame for a causal chain or else you could go on endlessly.

Take each situation, whether it is a cause or effect and develop it either through narrative, description, exemplification, process analysis, comparison and contrast, or definition. Use your research material in every paragraph to back up your material

2) Either causes or effects in a topical organization.

You may choose to develop only the causes or effects and structure your essay topically. If you wanted to examine the effects of on businesses leaving Utica, you could do it topically: educational environment, appearance of the city, and crime increase.

Again the various patterns of developments will work here too: descriptive, narrative, exemplification, process analysis, comparison and contrast, or definition. Use your research material in every paragraph to back up your opinions.

To find topics, brainstorm for ideas: what do I want to explore about different topics, the family, religion, education, wars, any diseases, suicide, parks, etc.

Thesis:

Let your thesis indicate whether your focus will be on the Effects, Causes, or both.

Your Proposal must be handed before you lock yourself into a topic

It will highlight in one page the following:

Discuss whether Human Rights are universal?

The Universal Declaration was adopted at a time when most Third World countries were still under colonial rule. Human rights' are only a cover for Western intervention in the affairs of the developing world. Developing countries, some also argue, cannot afford human rights since the tasks of nation-building and economic development are still unfinished. Suspending or limiting human rights is thus the sacrifice of the few for the benefit of the many. The human-rights concept is understood and upheld only by a small Westernized minority in developing countries; it does not extend to the lowest rungs of the ladder. Universality in these circumstances would be a universality of the privileged. Many also object to specific rights which they say reflect Western cultural bias: the right, for instance, to political pluralism, the right to paid vacations (always good for a laugh in the sweatshops of the developing world) (Shashi Tharoor, 2001)

Are Human Rights universal?

.Identify (to the best of your ability) what forms of life are around that you may recognize.

Introduction:Richard Louv (2005) believes that children now wander less, discover less and are losing some important connections to nature and place. Ultimately, children and therefore everyone are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature. Studies indicate that connection with nature is related to care for Earth. In other words, we protect what we know or what we love. Many scientific studies are also showing that connection to nature impacts mental health. This article (https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/sour-mood-getting-you-down-get-back-to-nature) from Harvard University studies how time in nature affects brain activity and improves mental health. Instructions:This week, you get a chance to actively engage in some Vitamin N(ature). Think about where the closest nature to you exists. Environmental historian William Cronon (https://www.williamcronon.net/) in his piece The Trouble with Wilderness (https://www.williamcronon.net/writing/Trouble_with_Wilderness_Main.html) states that nature exists all around us and that considering “wilderness” as a far away thing makes nature inaccessible to all socioeconomic classes . Think about where nature exists in your community. What purpose does it serve? Start to notice this week the nature around you in your daily life. Begin to bring awareness to what you see daily that you may currently overlook- the trees along the roadside, the birds chirping around you, what flowers are blooming, etc. Check out this article to see how birds are related to mental health: (https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/minding-the-body/201107/the-birds-and-the-trees) (who would have suspected?!?!?!) In a place in nature that is comfortable for you, please stop, sit, and relax without a phone to distract you for a minimum of 20-30 minutes. Due to COVID 19- you may choose to use your yard, neighborhood, or even look out your window. In a pinch, you could do an in-depth study of the plants and animals in your own home.Identify (to the best of your ability) what forms of life are around that you may recognize. You can try using the Seek App or iNaturalist app to identify a few species (these are free). What parts of nature can you observe through vision? What sounds of nature can you hear? Do you recognize some of the species you see?Record your observations. As you do the exercise, try to get more detailed. You can take a close look at a particular species, or perhaps notice more and more about the environment around you. Please do this for a minimum of 5 species. You may use the sources provided. You may also use more or less than two sources. Please relate to California atmosphere specifically the Bay Area. This is a Biology paper please relate to Biology or incorporate it in the paper. Please do not plagiarize, feel free to ask any questions that may arise.

Write a review of a website about ADD or ADHD.

Write a review of a website about ADD or ADHD. You will write this review for the general public, so you might target a particular publication, such as a student or local newspaper or one of the national magazines. This will help you anticipate what your reader already knows, what they value, and what criteria they accept as a basis of evaluation. Complete the following:

1. Develop a set of criteria that the general public would see as acceptable for a website about diseases and disorders (like ADHD).
2. Describe the website you have chosen, and then explain how it does ( or does not) perform the criteria you established above.
3. Use at least two scholarly sources to augment your understanding and perspective on these facts and elements. Include this research in the paper in an appropriate scholarly manner.

Does the experiment actually address the hypothesis?

Below is the instructions for the Lab Report from my Professor. Also attached is a pdf with the formatting that i am assuming she wants. Please let me know if more info is needed and i can get it for you.

This week you are designing, carrying out, and writing up your own physics experiment!

I will be asking the following questions when I grade:

Is this an experiment that relates substantively to PHY 111? (You can make the connection clear in your introduction.)
Are the independent, dependent, and control variables clear and appropriate?
Does the experiment actually address the hypothesis?
Was the experiment carried out with appropriate measurements and precision?
Is a thorough and accurate understanding of the relevant physics demonstrated?
Is the experiment original (we didnt already do it in class and I cant find it in existence already online)?
Is the conclusion appropriate and commensurate with the results?
Does the lab report follow the guidelines both the format and the substance of each section?

Write a thesis-driven analysis of a single film, similar to what you did for the first longer paper.

Write a thesis-driven analysis of a single film, similar to what you did for the first longer paper.
This time, however, you should bring in a secondary source or two. Try to bring in a passage from one of our textbooks, and try to bring in a passage from another person’s review/analysis of the same film.
In secondary source use, you present another person’s idea, then react to the idea in a way that helps you shape and express your own thoughts about the film. You can do something like, ‘This film exemplifies Michael Wood’s idea that cinema tells stories in “the same way our brain does”. The selection of meaningful periods from Chiron’s life form a narrative out of 25 years of chaos.’ And you can do something like, “Sean Allan’s review of the film argues that the movie focuses on the happier experiences from the troupe’s time in the military. I disagree: the film is better understood as an expose of the horrors of the end of Mao-era China.”
Make sure that your secondary source use is purposeful, like in the examples above. Don’t do something like quote somebody else’s summary of the film’s plot; you can describe the plot in your own words.
The film is Dead End by William Wyler
