DB Response – JL – Reserch

To describe the method of research, that I would use to collect data in high school is that while I was in high school we had to learn how to use the Dewey Decimal System in the library. In high school were what everyone had to learn how to use in the library the catalog system came along with that because when I learn how to use the system I also had to learn how to go to the catalog and find exactly what I were looking for because of the Dewey Decimal System. I always had so much trouble when it came to using the system because sometimes I would put the wrong information down and if I put the wrong information I would go to the catalog to see if I can find what I was looking for but because of the wrong information, I would go back and make sure that I put the right information and then I can find the book that I was looking for in the catalog card system. For the Dewey Decimal System, you would have to make sure that you put all of the information, if what you are looking for has a letter in front of the number you have to make sure that you put that letter and the number in it also.

nothing but height, other times simply by shelf location. For instance, the fourth shelf over, the third shelf down. The problems, as new books moved, records had to be changed constantly. The thing about Deweys call number system is that if you gave everything a number for a subject, and put them in order by that system, then books on a similar subject would always be together, explained Jane Siegel. Sigel serves as a rare book librarian in Columbia Universitys Rare Book and Manuscript Library, home to a collection of Deweys Papers.

The way that the methods or technology have changed is that in todays world you have more technology than you can use, we have the internet and many more technologies that we can do more and more search on that we use technology for right at our hand. The impact in researchers, and what I would continue to use is the Dewey Decimal System because it is still helping kids in today’s world on how to use the system to find what they are looking for in the library. It will also help them to learn how to use the library. If I were teaching high school I would try to teach them how to use the old method and the new method, because sometimes the old methods would be a good way for them to learn how to use the library just as your parents and grandparents had to learn how to use the library. I am not that good with technologies so that is why I would do my best to teach them how to use the library the old way and also with the new technologies.

DB Response – LG – HR

Please provide a brief response to the following. It is meant to add to the discussion.

What is the role of collective bargaining in the education or training industry today?

Collective bargaining is a process of negotiations conducted between employers and employees that define the terms, conditions, and rights of the employer and the employees as the foundation of an employed relationship (MUSE). Collective bargaining and advocacy enable stakeholders to work together so that students, educators, and the community benefit. Collective bargaining works by employer representatives and the employee union exchanging ideas, resolving problems, and coming to an agreement. This includes preparing for bargaining, conducting negotiations, ratifying a contract, resolving contract disputes, and clarifying the contract (NEA, 2020).

What are the pros and cons of the collective bargaining process in the education or training industry today?

There are pros and cons when it comes to making any type of agreement. Cons of the traditional collective bargaining tool are that it was adversarial in nature, pitting employers against employees. The employees would threaten to stop working to receive better wages and benefits, and when applied to education, the school board has limited control over the districts resources. Some pros are that there are new types of collective bargaining that can be used. Win-win bargaining seeks to find solutions that both sides can agree on. Instead of going on strike, expedited bargaining allows employees to continue working as long as progress is being made in the negotiation process. Progressive bargaining allows for more time to take up more issues and principled negotiations allow for each party to reach their goals without having to compromise (Seyfarth, J., 2008). Collective bargaining is a good tool to use because it holds the involved parties accountable for any breaches of the agreement that may occur.

What would you add or change about the approaches and ideas proposed by the class?

There is currently only post on the discussion board with information. When more posts become available, I will update post.

What literature gave you the best insight into the current situation? Why? Use citations and references as needed.

Of the resources that I chose for this post, I think that Human Resources Leadership for Effective Schools gave me the most insight. I have never been part of a union and really have no knowledge of what collective bargaining is. When reading Chapter 12, it was interesting to read about all the different laws in different states, what teachers are/are not allowed to do in certain states, what can and can not be discussed during negotiations, and the things that fall under the scope of the bargaining agreement. There is a lot of time, energy and effort put into creating a collective bargaining agreement. The information on the NEA site was useful as well because it gives direct insight from educators with first-hand knowledge of the issues, and it keeps you updated on all the things they continue to work on.

Federal and state laws require employers to maintain workers compensation coverage to meet minimum standards, covering a majority of employees for work-related illnesses and injuries (as long as the employee was not negligent in performing the assigned duties).

Discussion Board Prompt:
Federal and state laws require employers to maintain workers compensation coverage to meet minimum standards, covering a majority of employees for work-related illnesses and injuries (as long as the employee was not negligent in performing the assigned duties). Employees receive health care and monetary awards (if applicable), and dependents of workers killed on the job receive benefits. Workers compensation laws also protect employers and fellow workers by limiting the award an injured employee can recover from an employer and by eliminating the liability of coworkers in most accidents. Federal workers compensation statutes (laws) apply to federal employees or workers employed in a significant aspect of interstate commerce. Individual state workers compensation laws establish comprehensive programs and are applicable to most employers.
Managed care has been implemented for workers’ compensation coverage to improve the quality of medical benefits and services provided. What is the advantage of workers’ compensation managed care programs to employers and to employees? Explain.

Determine the amount the patients insurance policy will pay for the procedure.

Discussion Board Prompt:
Valley Dental Group is composed of three general practice dentists in the suburb of a large city. The group has a receptionist and an office manager. Most of the groups patients are from families with dental insurance. The benefits and coverages of the insurance policies are different. Some require preauthorization of all restorations, and others only require preauthorization for crowns, bridges, and dentures. Some policies have a family deductible for all dental care, whereas others have individual deductibles for non-preventive care only. The usual and customary prices that the insurance companies allow for procedures are different, so the amount the patient must pay depends on the insurance policy.
The practice has to organize the way the office handles the information flow to process insurance billing and track payments. Some of the tasks to be performed are as follow:
Verify the patients insurance company and policy number.
Keep track of deductible paid so far for family and/or family members.
Submit insurance claim for services rendered.
Determine the amount the patients insurance policy will pay for the procedure.
Collect the patients copayment and deductible before the patient leaves the office.
Follow up on insurance claims submitted that have not been paid.
Handle claim rejections and bill the patient for the amount not covered.
Collect statistics on the number of procedures done, the number of self-payments and insurance payments, the amount paid by insurance, and the number of claims rejected.
Collect statistics that measure the productivity of each dentist in the group.
Design a system to accomplish these tasks. Avoid duplication of effort and the storing of redundant data in your design. Write a discussion post detailing a design that includes the following:
1. What information must be collected?
2. What procedures are to be used to accomplish the tasks?

Ethical Egoism

This weeks topics are ethical subjectivism and ethical egoism.
The Question of the Week concerns self-interest, especially as construed by ethical egoism. I don’t know about you, but I find the issues surrounding self-interest to be fascinating. In life and in philosophy I find I am often wondering about the relation between self-interest and benevolence. Of course, Rachels concludes, as most philosophers have, that Ethical Egoism is an unacceptable moral theory. And indeed it is.

Write your personal viewpoint to the following question and incorporate Ayn Rand viewpoint:

To what extent can a thoroughly self-interested person, a person who faithfully follows Ethical Egoism, be a good person?

By good person I mean what commonsense morality would typically call a morally good or virtuous person.

You may get some additional inspiration by checking out an appearance Ayn Rand made on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1967.

The Invisible Man

For this essay, select two or three important events from different parts of the novel and discuss how these events either help or hinder the narrators quest to find out who he is and how he should live in society. Use one of the cultural context readings to develop your argument.

Make sure your paper has a clear central argument supported by specific textual evidence. This includes citing the novel and the 'cultural contexts' essays. Make connections between that essay and your thesis. Consider how the works of Emerson, Washington, DuBois, Locke, Garvey, or Ellisons 'Harlem Is Nowhere' and West Point essays relate to Invisible Man and the narrators quest for identity. Include page numbers when you quote or paraphrase information from Ellisons text or the other readings.

Suggestions for Events:

Speeches (graduation, eviction, boxing arena, Tod Cliftons funeral)
Interactions with women (magnificent blond at the Battle Royal, Emma, Woman Question encounter, Sybil)
Interaction with those in power (men at the smoker/Battle Royal, Dr. Bledsoe, Emerson, Lucius Brockway, Mr. Norton, Ras, Jack)
Interactions with other African-Americans (his grandfather, Dr. Bledsoe, Jim Trueblood, Lucious Brockway, Mary, Ras, Rinehart, Tod Clifton, Wrestrum)
