s, you will need to find a
visual source for the history of science. You will then need to research it. Practically speaking
this means answering the following list of questions about it:
1. What does it represent?
2. How does it represent it?
3. How is it made? What is it made of (material, texture…)?
4. When, where and by who has it been made?
5. For what purposes was it made?
6. What was the intended audience? Has it changed over time?
7. How has it travelled? Where? Under which conditions?
8. What is your source’s biography? (Think of the reading by Fabian Krämer [2009]).
9. Which field of investigation does it relate to (medicine, anatomy, geology, botany,
zoology…)?
10. Which hypothesis does your source enable you to formulate regarding the history of the
scientific field it is related to?
Once you are satisfied that you’ve got answers to these questions (the list is intended to be
comprehensive but not meant to be limitative, you may add questions of your own)

Youland

Order Description

IAH 204: Asia and the World
Spring 2015: Professor Keith

Paper #2

Due date: Thursday, 4/2, in class, in hard copy.

Question:

Imagine that How To Get Filthy Rich In Rising Asia is the only book you’ve ever read about the country where the novel takes place. The country is unnamed in the novel, so call it “Youland.” A friend is about to visit Youland, they know you’ve read this book, so they ask you to tell them about it. Write a 5-page introduction to Youland for your friend to read on the plane.

Formal Guidelines:

The paper should be 5 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins. No title, cover page, or bibliography are necessary, and please do not restate the question at the top of the paper.

When citing from the book, which you should do, please do not use conventional footnotes. Instead, simply place the page number for the passage you are quoting in parentheses. The page number should come from the original pagination and not the page number in the course pack.

Example: “Your city is not laid out as a single-celled organism, with a wealthy nucleus surrounded by an ooze of slums” (20).

Please note that the parentheses come after the quotation, but before the punctuation mark ending the sentence or the phrase (comma, semicolon, colon, period, etc.).

IMPORTANT NOTE: you’ll probably use the main character’s life and experiences as your main examples in the description of “Youland.” But because this novel is written in the second person, you might find it difficult to refer to the character in the third person. When describing the character, refer to him as “Mr. You.” This will avoid confusion, especially in constructions like the possessive (it’ll be “Mr. You’s life” instead of “your life.”)

Property dispositions

Samuel has some land near I 10 just a few miles from Slidell, LA where he has an excellent crawfish, shrimp and barbecue restaurant. He has heard that the state might take the property under an eminent domain action in order to add an new interchange. But, the plans for that are still not finalized. If the state takes it, he might receive $800,00 for it. After depreciation deductions are posted, his tax basis in the property would be about $60,000. A real estate agent, Slick Willy, offered Sam a deal. He could trade the property for a nice building in downtown Slidell. The building has appraised at $900,000 and currently has a clothing store in and some offices and apartments on the 2, 3 and 4th floors. Sam also received a cash offer to buy his business for $700,000 and they gentleman that made the offer meant cash in the form of $100 bills. What advise do you have for Sam?
