Leadership Competency: Self-Management
Introduction
In the first few weeks of this course, you learned about psychological perspectives of leadership, leadership theories and approaches, and a variety of contexts from which leaders emerge. You’re learning thus far will provide you with a solid foundation as you consider specific leadership competences (self-management, cognitive adeptness, interpersonal adeptness, and organizational acumen) and leadership development strategies over the next several weeks. As you learn about specific leadership competencies and leadership development strategies, be sure to keep the psychological perspectives of leadership in mind. Also, consider how each of the leadership competencies and leadership development strategies is rooted in psychology.
This week, you will explore self-management as a leadership competency. A leader’s ability to self-manage is the foundation of his or her credibility. Consider the following questions as you complete this week’s assignments: Are you aware of how others perceive you? How do you think your actions and behaviors affect others? What ethical principles might guide your leadership decisions and behaviors?

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this week, you should be able to:
• Analyze the importance of self-awareness in effective leadership
• Evaluate and justify strategies to enhance or expand self-awareness
• Compare principles of ethical leadership with principles from the APA Ethics Code
• Explain how the adoption of ethical principles contributes to self-management
Application: Ethics
Self-management begins with self-awareness and then extends to ethical behaviors. How leaders manage their relationships, time, priorities, communication, and health is in part guided by their ethical principles. Think for a moment about your own values and ethics. Consider how each guides your behaviors and your ability to manage yourself.
To prepare for this assignment:
• Review Chapter 16 in the course text, Leadership: Theory and Practice. Pay particular attention to the principles of ethical leadership.
• Review the general principles listed in the APA Ethics Code. Think about how each might apply to leadership.
• Consider how the principles of ethical leadership are similar to and different from the general principles in the APA Ethics Code.
• Reflect on how at least one principle of ethical leadership and one general principle in the APA Ethics Code might contribute to self-management.
The assignment: (1-2 pages)
• Compare (similarities and differences) the principles of ethical leadership with the general principles in the APA Ethics Code. Explain any conclusions you might draw from your comparison.
• Explain how at least one ethical principle of leadership and one general principle in the APA Ethics Code might contribute to effective self-management and why. Be specific.
Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the Learning Resources for this course.

On the Bauhaus” comparative essay assignment
All of these week’s readings focus on the Bauhaus. Although they are all written for an academic audience, each takes a different perspective, makes a different argument, and represents a different form of academic writing.
Two of the articles––Meggs’ “The Bauhaus and the New Typography” and Winkler’s “Morality and Myth”––address the Bauhaus’ influence on contemporary design practice and education.
This assignment asks you to write an essay that explains which of these two articles (Meggs and Winkler) you believe
provides the most compelling argument about the influence of the Bauhaus on contemporary design practice and education.
Your essay should:
 identify and describe each article’s key argument or thesis
 identify and explain each article’s approach (i.e. historical, critical, or theoretical)
 assess the strengths and weaknesses of each article’s approach
 identify which article you believe best informs us about the impact of the Bauhaus on contemporary design
practice and education, and explain why by analyzing its argument.

In general, your assignments are to perform the following actions:
Read the associated chapter(s) and other resources related to the topic:

1) Search the Web and locate three (3) Web sites that relate to the readings (associated chapter(s)). These sites could be white papers or research documents found on research databases, commercial or non-commercial sites that have something to do with the readings, or news articles that discuss the topics. For each URL write a one-paragraph summary of the Web site focusing on how it relates to the readings (chapter).

2) Create a Word document containing the following:
This paper should follow APA guidelines with a title page; and APA style citations (in the content) and reference page. No table of contents or abstract is required.

a- A title page containing your name, course, assignment and date

b- A Background Section (minimum two pages) discussing what you found in your research from reading the textbook (associated chapter(s) to the topic) and performing research on Internet (URL). This is what the authors think about the topic and where most the readings should be cited.

c- An Analysis Section (minimum one page), which is what you learned about the topic. Other authors may be cited here as well to support your analysis.

d- A URLs section containing the three URL’s with their accompanying paragraph from step 1 (For each URL write a one-paragraph summary of the Web site focusing on how it relates to the readings). (one page)

•Outline how a global cyber society could be impacted (your subject) in a national and international level, including, technical, operational and managerial issues.
•Solution – Present feasible solutions to managing Cybersecurity in a national level. In this section, provide solutions that are currently being utilized to minimize the issues and also, provide solutions that are not yet being utilized (be creative).
•Conclusion – Emphasize the main points and solutions.
•References and works – The final report should include references to at least 8 different magazines, books, and/or Web resources (provide link) that were consulted for information.
