Analyze the rise and impact of Charlemagne

Analyze the rise and impact of Charlemagne

In the first centuries since the coming of “the Barbarians” out of central Europe, it appeared that the previous understanding of stability and “nation-state” had been eradicated. Yet, by the 600-700 period, a few strong, former, tribes had gained control of old Gaul, the Iberian peninsula and the island of Albion. Still, no one central power had arisen and perhaps the legends of the old Empires would merely become myths. In the middle 700s, however, one man emerged with a drive to attempt to recreate the glory of the old Roman Empire.

You can best address this essay in three parts.

First, explain the significance of Charlemagne starting with his family’s rise to power. Be sure to discuss the impact of/during his rule, successes and failures of his reign and the aftermath of his rule, including what happened to his vast empire.

Second, analyze what his empire signified and the connection to the church-state issue, the dream of a unified Europe, and Rome re-born.

Finally make an assessment for the future of Europe (so, after Charlemagne, the years to come) based on his actions—what will be the impact of a new unified Europe, a new “Roman Empire”—a  “Holy Roman Empire.”  What do you perceive is going to happen?  In other words, what sorts of issues, challenges or developments will emerge in the years to come BECAUSE of Charlemange’s unification actions.

This essay is dealing primarily with Course Outcome #2 on historical influences & Outcome #3 on the role of the individual, while using the knowledge from Outcome #1 and historical method from Outcome #6 (and of course “college level writing,” Outcome #7). Consult the syllabus to read these outcomes in greater depth.

This should be a 4-6 page essay that demands solid writing based on good historical research (3-5 sources would be best). All citations must be done in the Chicago Style Guide, the citation type for History as a discipline. This assessment MUST be typed (11 or 12 point font; Times or Calibri is best), 1.5 spacing and possess good grammar, spelling, and a clear, organized thought-process. As with the other work, there are NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS ACCEPTED. The work should not be longer than 6-7 pages. Be cautious and careful about academic integrity (consult the syllabus).  This Course Outcome Essay will be uploaded as document; you must upload as either “.doc” “.docx” or “.pdf”
