Cognitive Dissonance Theory

Last week you examined various types of interpersonal influence—strategies by which other people guide your thoughts and actions so they can meet their goals. This week you will examine intrapersonal persuasion or self-persuasion. Self-persuasion occurs when something you have done causes you to change your attitudes, beliefs, and future behavior. This type of change can be rather impactful—after all, you are doing it to yourself—and as a result, self-persuasion is a very powerful strategy for getting you to think and do new things.

To illustrate how self-persuasion operates, imagine that someone asks you to sign a petition to support higher taxes as a first step toward getting you to vote in favor of a new tax initiative. If like many people, you hold a negative attitude toward paying more taxes, you might resist the first request. However, if the person was able to get you to sign the petition, your behavior of signing the petition would be inconsistent with your attitude toward paying more taxes. The inconsistency between your pro-tax behavior and anti-tax attitude would create a state of discomfort called “cognitive dissonance.” As you see in the reading, many people reduce their discomfort in this situation by changing their attitudes and beliefs about what they have done. In this case, you would likely justify signing the petition by “softening” your attitude toward paying more taxes. The way in which you rationalize or justify your discrepant behavior leads to some very interesting and, on occasion, some rather unusual adjustments in what you subsequently think and do.

To prepare for this Assignment:

• Read all of Chapter 4 in the course text, Persuasion: Psychological Insights and Perspectives.

• Think about how you would define cognitive dissonance and reflect on the different ways in which you can reduce it. Consider what it means for a cognition to be “least resistant to change” and how that predicts how you are likely to reduce your dissonance.

• Think about how the concept of “induced compliance” relates to the tax petition example in the lead-in. Carefully consider the role of being paid for signing the petition and why being paid very little would cause the most need to adjust your attitude to favor paying more taxes and voting for the new initiative.

• Reflect on why making a decision between two alternatives is likely to create some dissonance. Think about how “spreading the alternatives”—adjusting attitudes so they are more favorable toward the chosen alternative and less favorable toward the rejected alternative—reduces dissonance. Consider what type of decision would create the greatest amount of discomfort and need to “spread the alternatives.”

• Consider why working hard to achieve a goal can cause you to experience cognitive dissonance. What do you think causes more dissonance: working hard and achieving the goal, or working hard but failing to achieve the goal? The key to answering this question is to identify the inconsistent cognitions that lead you to justify your efforts.

• Think about whether you “feel” aroused and uncomfortable when your behavior is discrepant from your beliefs. Does your experience match what the research says about the experience of dissonance?

• Consider whether aversive consequences are critical for you to experience dissonance, or whether dissonance is greatest when your behavior is inconsistent with an important self-view, such as being an intelligent or moral person. Also consider whether you know anyone that does not seem to ever experience dissonance, and what it is about the person that “insulates” him/her from feeling discomfort when behavior is inconsistent with attitudes and beliefs.

• Finally, reflect on how culture may influence the experience of dissonance and how the behavior of others can cause you to feel vicarious dissonance.

With these thoughts in mind: APA style format, No Plagiarism and must be cited with references. Assignment must be done according to course rubric. Thank you

Write 1 page brief description of a time when you experienced cognitive dissonance as a result of making a difficult decision, saying something that you did not believe, or working hard for nothing. Identify the inconsistent cognitions that were the source for your discomfort and explain how you reduced the dissonance. Using either a cultural or personality analysis, describe the type of person who might not have experienced dissonance in this situation. Finally, describe how you think you can avoid justifying a discrepant act and instead learn from your “mistake.”

moral hazard

The research in the textbook shows a number of ways in which dissonance causes people to rationalize or justify discrepant behavior. Whereas rationalization can prevent people from learning from their mistakes, dissonance can also be used to motivate people to make changes that benefit them and society (i.e., pro-social behavior). An example of this can be found in the research on using hypocrisy to induce dissonance and behavior change.
To prepare for this assignment:
•    Read the paper by Stone and colleagues (1994), paying particular attention to the use of hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance to motivate people to practice safe sex.
•    Think of the hypocrisy paradigm, pay particular attention to how you would define and explain it, and consider ways that dissonance in hypocrisy differs from dissonance in an induced compliance paradigm.
•    Think about how researchers test the effect of hypocrisy on behavior and how it can be measured.
•    Consider the limitations in the Stone, et al., study and think about how you might avoid them.
•    Then think about designing an induction of hypocrisy that would motivate people to use sunscreen.

The assignment (1 page): APA style format, No Plagiarism and must be cited with references. Assignment must be done according to courses rubric for full grade. Thank you

(1)Briefly define and explain the hypocrisy paradigm. How does the dissonance in hypocrisy differ from the dissonance in the induced compliance paradigm? Why do the researchers predict that hypocrisy motivates people to change their behavior
rather than their attitudes?

(2)Explain how the researchers tested the effect of hypocrisy on behavior change in this study. Specifically, describe who the subjects were, what they did in each condition of the study, and how behavior change was measured. Summarize the results of the study.

(3)Assess and explain the problems you see with the study and the conclusions drawn by the researchers. Describe two limitations to the study and explain how they impact the results.

(4)Design an induction of hypocrisy to motivate people to use sunscreen more often when they spend time in the sun. Describe who the target individuals would be and then explain how you would get them to make a public commitment to the use of sunscreen and how you would make them mindful of past failures to use sunscreen. Finally, explain how you would measure their motivation to reduce dissonance by changing their behavior.

A Pilot Study of Administrators and Special Education Teachers’ Perception about Community-Based Vocational Instruction for Students with Intellectual Disabilities for Post-School Employment .

The main objective is to explore perception of administrators and special education teachers toward implementing the vocational nstrucation at secondary schools for students with intellectual disabilities. I also want to test if there is a difference in perception, barriers and benefits of implementing the program between administrators and teachers, between males and females, by level of education and years of professional experience of the participants.

I have not written data analysis plan section yet, and I prefer SPSS to be used. I do not have scoring key of the instrument, however I attached an article used the same instrument to see what the author used as scoring key. I completed the data collection and it is only 26 responses that I have from a target population of 40 administrators and special education teachers.

Expansion of MMWC

Read Case Study Mead Meals on Wheels Center—Part I (from Chapter 4) and Part II (from Chapter 5).  Using the information in the case study problems, especially Problem 3 (from Part II), discuss the following:
MMWC buys the equipment to expand their services. Present a recommendation supporting the type of financial impact the expansion of services will have on MMWC.
Clearly label the calculation of the impact of food costs and the financial impact costs. Use formulas to calculate the costs and format the cells to insert a comma if there is more than three numbers and round to the nearest whole number.
Submit to your instructor your two-to-three page Word document (not including title and reference pages) and your Excel worksheet. Your paper should be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide, and you must cite at least two scholarly sources in addition to the textbook.

The Mead Meals on Wheel Center- Part I ( page 166)
The Mead Meals on Wheel Center provides two meals per day to the home bound elderly. The town of Millsbridge pays MMWC $32 dollars per week for each person its services for the week. Each person receives 14 meals for the week. There is no shortage of demand for MMWC services among the elderly citizens of Millsbridge and MMWC can find qualified recipients for as many meals as it can deliver.
To service the contract, MMWC has a central kitchen which can produce a maximum of 9600 meals per day. It cost MMWC anaverage of 36,000 per week to operate the kitchen and MMWC other central facilities regardless of the number of meals that MMWC serves. This covers all of MMWC’s fixed cost ( i.e., rent, equipment costs and its personnel including administrative staff) as well as its fixed contract costs( e.g., utilities, snow removal). The first problem that MMWC faces is figuring out how much it can afford to spend, per person, per week for food to supply the program. Food is MMWC’s only variable expense. You are MMWC only financial analysis and your boss has asked you to decide what to do.

Mead Meals on Wheel Center-Part II ( page 208)
During the year, you analyzed Mead Meals on Wheels Center’s kitchen operations and determined that MMWC could increase the capacity of the kitchen to 10,400 meals per day. You see a chance to increase the number of meals that MMWC can deliver to the elderly as well as a way to increase your weekly revenue. However expanding the kitchen’s capacity will require you to purchase $625,000 worth of equipment. The equipment has a useful life of five years.
Just as you started your analysis of the expansion, a food purveyor from outside the Millbridge city limits responded to MMWC’s request for bids and gave the center a bid that was $.75 per-person-week below the break-even level that you calculated. The executive director is interested in any idea that will expand service delivery, but she is concerned about being able to pay for the equipment. She tells you that MMWVC’s cost of capital is 12 percent. She has instructed you to use the new equipment if it generates enough additional contribution to pay for itself, taking into account the time value of money.
