In a comparison/contrast essay, a writer must do the following:
1) Identify two main topics and three key discussion points about them
2) Compare and/or contrast the topics in terms of each key point
3) Maintain consistent order of topics and points
4) Present a clear controlling idea/opinion
The thesis may indicate either that
One subject is stronger than the other
Both subjects have strengths
Both subjects possess noteworthy flaws
Point-by-Point Approach
In this organizational pattern, each body paragraph shows how each point of
comparison applies to both main topics before moving on to the next point.
Sample Outline. Consider how the following 3-point thesis and corresponding topic
sentences demonstrate the point-by-point approach to a comparison-contrast essay:
3-Point Thesis: Despite the benefits to shopping at both grocery stores, Whole Foods is
the obvious choice because it offers more environmentally-friendly
products, organic produce, and healthy alternatives to medicine.
Topic Sentence 1: Unlike Safeway, Whole Foods offers a wide
selection of environmentally friendly products.

Topic Sentence 2: Considering Safeways pesticide-treated, hormone-injected produce,
Whole Foods organic food also makes it the safer choice.

Without repeating any claims or adding any new information, emphasize the importance
