Discuss about prevention of childhood obesity is an important public health priority, given the high prevalence of obesity in children as young as 2-5 years of age,1-3, and the associated health risks when obesity persists in adulthood (Bourgeois et al., 2016). Numerous interventions have been implemented and tested to prevent obesity in children such as parent’s influence and control over childrens behaviors. This includes diet, physical activity, media use, and sleep.
Family interventions are a key strategy in this effort, but the strongest qualitative data of evidence collected for my project is an article that portrays childhood obesity as significantly high among racial and ethnic minority children especially African Americans in the United States (Isong et al., 2017). This article presents a qualitative study that follows obese children while evaluating socioeconomic factors related to why they are obese. This article further shows the prevalence of risk factors that are different due to race and ethnicity
The reason why I think this article is the strongest evidence is that it presents a better understanding of the relative contribution of specific obesity risk factors to racial and ethnic disparities at different stages of the life course and it designs targeted interventions (Isong et al., 2017). This study also presents early childhood risk factors to obesity such as television watching of more than two hours a day, consumption of sugared beverages, inadequate physical activities, and many minority children being raised by grandparents who feed their grandchildren with unhealthy food.
The data collected from this qualitative study will be used to identify ethnic health disparities during early childhood. It will target risk factors. Comprehensive solutions will be put in places, such as limiting the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, addressing neighborhood safety so that children can have the privilege to play outdoors and, this will safeguard the health of African American children and adolescents.
