Fredrick Douglass was taught to read and write despites laws prohibiting it. It was with the aid of his master’s wife that this came about. As for Malcolm X he had grown up with out an education. During his time in prison he taught himself how to read and write with a dictionary. He would copy out entire pages and eventually learned through this form of repetition. Both of these men had to struggle to achieve literacy and it was their desire for knowledge and understanding that kept them going.
