Fredrick Douglass was taught to read and write despites laws prohibiting it. It was with the aid of his master’s wife that this came about. As for Malcolm X he had grown up with out an education. During his time in prison he taught himself how to read and write with a dictionary. He would copy out entire pages and eventually learned through this form of repetition.
