Civil Rights ID Biography Paper (On Harriet Tubman!!!!!!!)
Your job is to research the background, goals, accomplishments, and tactics that Harriet Tubman was/is known for. You need to find out enough information to:
a) explain Harriet Tubman to me through a paper, and
b) to be able to accurately and confidently discuss civil rights issues from this Harriet Tubman’s perspective.
This research paper is designed to help you learn about and better understand Harriet Tubman.
Format:
First Paragraph: Opening paragraph
Introduce Tubman with an interesting story about her (from your research)
Then work towards a thesis statement that responds to this question:
How has Harriet Tubman influenced civil rights and the cause for equality?
Thesis Format: Harriet Tubman changed America by A, B, and C (specific historical evidence).
Second Paragraph: Biography Paragraph
Give some basic details about Tubman. What is her background? Did her background influence their civil rights work?
Third Paragraph: Body Paragraph, Civil Rights Work
Pick two or more important things about her work:
– Major issues/goals she focused on.
– Tactics Tubman used to accomplish her goals, get the message out.
– Accomplishments/challenges Tubman achieved or faced.
– Point of view/Perspective- was Tubman a liberal/conservative, separatist/integrationist, nonviolent/militant, etc.
– Other interesting pieces of information relevant to her civil rights work.
Fourth Paragraph: Criticism
-What have critics said about this Tubman’s work?
-What did this criticism do to her work? (if you have any evidence)
Fifth Paragraph: Conclusion
-First sentence: Do you personally agree with her work? (Yes I do!)
-Second/Third sentence: Did anything about your research open or change your mind about a certain issue or topic?
-Fourth sentence: Any other thoughts or opinions about this Tubman and her work?
-Fifth sentence: What would Tubman say about the race/equality/civil rights conversations that are happening in American society right now?
-Sixth sentence: How is Tubman and her work historically significant to American History?
Requirements:
– 2-4 pages typed, double spaced, 1-inch margins, 12-point font.
– A properly formatted Works Cited document with at least 2 secondary and 2 primary sources.
– Sufficient, properly formatted in-text citations in the body of the paper for all your sources. Sufficient means that you use each source AT LEAST once.
Helpful Hints/Friendly Reminders:
– If your paper is not within the specified length, it is an automatic 10% (whole letter grade)
deduction. Same deduction for failing to have the type/number of sources in the Works Cited.
– Wikipedia is NOT a valid source. If you want to use it, trace the hyperlinks in the article back
to the original source. Wiki can be a good way to find primary sources if you take the time to trace their sources. If this doesnt make sense, ask me and I will show you.
– This should be polished, edited, and professional.
