You must research and write a four to five pages(or longer!)personal code of ethics. The paper should have the following parts:
1.An Introduction(one-three paragraphs): How will your Personal Code of Ethics help you be a more ethical person? What do you hope to accomplish by preparing your Personal Code of Ethics(besides getting a grade!)? You can explain the structure of the paper. You should end your Introduction with a thesis statement that summarizes your goals. It is important that your Introduction is interesting enough to make a reader keep reading!
2.Part I: This part of your Personal Code of Ethics explains your approach to ethics.Prepare a detailed statement about your personal approach to ethics rooted in a recognized ethical philosophy like the ones described in the Reynolds book: This section should show that you have a detailed knowledge of the history and proponents of the ethical principle(s) that support your approach. See the IEP, the SEP,Reynolds,and/or Thompson and the other recommended readings. You can find many more approaches in other books and on the Internet (one to three or more pages)a.This requires you to do some research! You have many resources at your disposal from the discussions, lectures (slide shows), readings, videos, and Web sites included in the course. There are also suggested references listed in the Resources in CPST 3050 Module #and Additional Resourcesdocuments in each module.b.You must decide if you subscribe to a deontological (duty-based),teleological (consequentialist), or other typeof ethics.c.You must pick a specific school or theory of ethics that falls within the type of ethics that you chose. Roughly two-thirds of this section should describe your choice. You should define and explain your selected ethical school ortheory(e.g., altruism, common sense, egoism, hedonism, relativism, rule utilitarianism, etc.). Your explanation should tell the reader about the original and subsequent proponents (i.e., who) of your choice and locate it in history(time and place in the world).d.If you think that more than one school or theory works for you, you need to document each one as described in the previous section and show how the different approaches to ethics work together or work against each other to create yourunique school of ethics.Share at least one example of how you applied this approach to some incident in your life.e.The second part of this section should explain why you embraced this school or theory of ethics as your own. What does this type of ethics mean to you?Why did you rule out at least two other schools or theories?f.This section should include citations (inline or footnotes) that link your quotations or the ideas of others to sources in your Works Cited list at the end of your project.See the videos in Module 12 for examples.
3.Part II: This part of your project relates your choice of a school or theory of ethics to five aspects of your life: Yourself, Your family, Tulane and your fellow students, Your employer and co-workers, and Society. Start each of the five sections of your code with a statement like In recognition of my obligation to myself I will or As a member of my family I will. Then list (as bullet points) at least three ways you plan to relate to the individual or group that defines each of the five categories in context of your newly-defined ethics. Each statement in each section should briefly explain how you plan to accomplish your stated goal, citing examples that relate to your ethical point of view (twopages or more.).4.References: Document your sources in MLA format in a bibliography so that anyone to look up the articles and books that you used.See the examples throughout the class documents and at the Web sites listed in the next section..You should title your bibliography Works Cited
