Infrastructure as a symbol of modernity, expertise and national pride

Drawing on ALL of the assigned readings (case studies) of the class, provide an in-depth analysis of that case study of infrastructural politics. You should organize your paper around a central thesis encapsulating your interpretation of the readings. For instance, your argument during the week on waste in Palestine might be that, in the absence of adequate waste infrastructures or Palestinian control over these infrastructures, Palestinians are subjected to a kind of infrastructural violenceor waste siegethat is often invisible but deeply insidious. Or your thesis based on the week on the Panama Canal could be that the history of the Canal shows us that understandings of infrastructure should take into account the underlying ecological resources and systems that they rely on and thus, that these underlying relations are essential to fully grappling with infrastructures function and impacts. You would then go into depth explaining how the author(s) make these arguments and the different pillars of the argument. You will need to provide some historical background and to describe the context more broadly. Make sure that your essay is focused on an infrastructural dimension of the weeks readings and that you connect to (at least one of) the theoretical foundations of the class (Modernity/ Expertise/Nation-Building, Splintering Urbanism, Colonial Legacies, and Embodied Infrastructures).
