Read Racism and Research: the Case of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study by Allan M.
Brandt. (NOTE: the article is available in the required project folder in Blackboard). After reading the article, answer the questions from the two sections below:
Section 1:
In your own words, write 1-2 paragraphs describing the events presented in the essay. Answer each of the following specific questions in your response:
a. What were the main discussion points of the essay?
b. What were the results and consequences of the study?
c. Would it be acceptable to replicate this study today? Why? or Why not?
d. Was this study ethical/unethical? Explain why.
Section 2:
Using one of the anthropological perspectives on race and racism presented in the textbook, explain the events described in the essay.
a. For the anthropological perspective you choose, explain how it is relevant to the
article and draw one or more conclusions from your analysis.
b. Discuss the limitations of the anthropological perspective you choose in describing
the event. In other words, what does the perspective miss or not explain well.
Your project commentary should be limited to 3-4 four pages, grammatically corrected, and typed (double-spaced, no larger than 12 point font). The last day to submit your project is April 19. Absolutely no project will be accepted after this date.
