SONYA’S POST: My MSN specialty track is nursing informatics. My PICOT question for my MSN project is in inpatient nurses who make medication errors, does implementing an electronic medication system as compared to no electronic medication system, decrease medication errors by 90% in the first quarter of the year (4 months).
The value that qualitative research can bring to my area of interest is by going to the inpatient units of my hospital and observing the nurses in action prior to implementing the electronic medication system. Key processes and problems could be identified. Along with common mistakes and parts of the med pass that the nurses found to be difficult or most time consuming. Once this data was gathered our organization then shopped around for the best electronic medication system to suit the inpatient nurses needs. When the most suitable electronic medication system was found. It was then implemented, and noted that it produced a seamless, more efficient medication administration process for our inpatient nurses. It also reduced our medication errors by 90% in the first quarter of the year. The over all value of this qualitative research, and implementation of this electronic medication administration system improved patient safety. This in turn produced better patient outcomes and increased the quality improvement of our hospital.
